Coff stares out the window. “Is there anything we can do to help?”

Ozzie shakes his head. “No, Reed’s dad is handling it for them.”

Everyone is silent for the next hour as I stare out the window. It becomes clear we aren’t going into the city. The lights become fewer and farther between as we drive. Finally, we pull onto a gravel driveway.

“The place is fully stocked. There’s a phone charger on the counter. Reed will be in touch soon. In the meantime, he says you need to stay inside,” Ozzie says.

“I really appreciate this, Oz,” Coff says.

“Just stay safe. You haven’t paid next month’s rent yet.”

Coff laughs. “Got it.”

Rent? Is this his roommate? If it is, that might mean Logan is single. For a moment, there are butterflies in my stomach at the possibility of us again. But then I remember, I’m not single. No, I’m married to a man I hate. A man who is doing his damndest to get us killed.

Oz hands Logan a piece of paper. “The code.”

He turns back to us. “Let’s go.”

We follow him to the door. He punches in the numbers, and we all walk in. The place is nicer than I expected. After a quick tour, we discover three bedrooms and the kitchen is fully stocked. Duke pulls out several items.

“Delaney, you want a sandwich?”

“Yes, please. I’m starving.”

He nods and gets to work. I go back into the bedrooms and check out the closets and dressers. Empty.

“You looking for something?” Logan asks.

I spin to find him standing close. “I was hoping there might be an extra T-shirt or something.”

He nods. “I’ll ask if we can get some clothes. If we are only here for the night, then likely not.”

One night? This seems like a lot of effort for one night. But maybe they use this place all the time.

We eat sandwiches, then Duke goes into his bedroom to sleep. Logan sits on the couch.

“Are you going to sleep?” I ask.

He nods. “I’ll be fine here.”

The man is over six feet tall, and the couch is not that long.

“Why would you sleep on the couch when there is a bed down the hall?”

He nods to the door. “If anyone comes in, I want them to see me first.”

I shiver at the thought of someone finding us here. “There’s no way anyone can find us.”

He tilts his head. “I found you.”

“Yes, but you said that was because Duke used his credit card.”

He stands up. “And your real names were used for your airline tickets. Someone could have seen us get into the car at the airport.”

I wrap my arms around myself. “You think we were followed?”

“No, but there are many ways people have of finding someone. I want to be ready, just in case.”
