“Why did you do that?”

“Because we are not going to the FBI for anything. And since they have your number and know what’s going on, I guarantee you they will be tracing that phone.”

“If we don’t rely on the FBI, what are we going to do?” I ask.

“Rely on each other. We’ll figure this out.”

He sounds confident, but I’m not so sure.

CHAPTER9

Logan

I leavethe psychologist’s office with a smile. Three sessions in and I believe I have her convinced I’m fine. Not that I have to convince her. I am fine. But I need her to tell my brother that to get him off my back.

But then I remember what Brian told me, and I’m angry all over again. Nelson called in the tip about the warehouse, claiming Duke had set a trap, killing those men inside. He also confirmed what I was certain of. Duke wasn’t in that warehouse. Since I’d been watching the place, I knew Nelson’s tip was a lie. Which apparently makes me a potential witness and has amped up my brother’s concern about me.

If it weren’t for Delaney, I would never have stuck around for the counseling sessions, and I’d already be back in New York. Delaney. Why the fuck am I even staying for her? She’s married. What we had was in the past. Clearly, I must be obsessed, which is another reason to get myself back home.

But dammit, she didn’t marry for love. But she’s still married. But she shouldn’t be. God, I’m going to drive myself crazy.

I climb into my car and toss my phone onto the passenger seat. It instantly vibrates with a call. My brother, probably checking up on me.

“Hey, Brian. Yes, I just got done with another session.”

“This isn’t about that. Do you still have eyes on Delaney Manzia?”

I sit up taller. “No, why?”

“Shit.” His shoes click on the floor as he walks fast. “My informant told me there’s a hit out for Duke and his entire family for what happened at the warehouse. She called me, and she sounded scared.”

She called him? “I’ll find her.” I toss the phone back onto the seat, then pull out of the parking lot.

Her car is in the lot of the Manzia building. I run into the office, but no one is there. I check each room and find the safe in the back office open and empty. Maybe Duke left in a hurry and took his sister with him.

It’s unlikely he’d go back to their house, but I go there to check, just in case. When I knock on the door, I hear laughter. Finally, the door opens, and Nelson stands there in only underwear. There are two women in the room behind him, also only in underwear.

He grins and points at me. “I recognize you. You were at the cemetery. Hey, how did you get out of that grave?”

“Where are Delaney and Duke?”

His smile drops. “Don’t know. Don’t care.” Then he slams the door in my face.

My instinct is to break it down and ruin his day, but the odds of Delaney or Duke being here are low.

My phone buzzes with a text from my brother. I scan it as I get back into my car.

Delaney’s number. She’s ignoring Brian, but he thinks she might respond to me.

I stare at it, debating whether to call or text. Since I have no idea if she is in danger at the moment, I send a text not to further jeopardize her.

Me:It’s Logan. Looking for you.

I lean back, racking my brain about how to let her know I know she’s in danger without coming out and saying it. Then it comes to me.

Me:I got your favorite pizza and am heading over. Pepperoni and onions.

Hopefully, she remembers that conversation we had years ago and will know it’s me. How can anyone hate onions on a pizza? The memory of her nose shriveling up when I suggested that pizza has me smiling.
