Logan runs his hands over his face and closes his eyes. When he opens them, they’re glassy and full of emotion.

Something is really bothering him. I uncross my arms and place my hands on his shoulders. “What is going on?”

“I overheard your dad talking to some men. He sells drugs and kills anyone who doesn’t fall in line.”

I laugh. I mean, really, this is outrageous. “Is this some prank you and Duke are playing?”

He frowns. “No, I’m serious.”

He is serious. “You overheard? Where was this? Who was he talking to?”

He grabs my hands again. “This was this afternoon. I overheard your dad talking about taking out a detective. I don’t know the guys he was talking to.” He swallows. “I need to ask you something.”

Why is he saying this about my dad? Is it because I wouldn’t agree to leave with him tonight? Now he wants me to think my dad is a killer?

“Do you know what my brother does?”

I blink at his complete change of topic. “Why are you bringing up your brother?”

“Because I need to know if you know who he is.”

I shake my head. “You said his name is Brian. I don’t think you said what he does for a living.”

“So, when you came up to me at that bar, you didn’t know who I was?”

I step back. “Logan, tell me what’s going on.”

He leans back and stares up at the ceiling. “My brother works for the FBI and is well aware of who your father is. I confirmed this after what I heard this afternoon.”

I step farther away. “You have the FBI investigating my father?”

He stands up and walks over to me. “No, I found out today your dad has been under investigation for some time.”

Why is he saying this? “Logan, I don’t know why you are doing this, but if the FBI is investigating my father, they won’t find anything. I’d know if my dad was dealing drugs. There’s no exchange of packages at work. The guys who come in work on the construction crews. I’ve known most of them for years.”

“But what if you’re wrong?”

“What if you’re wrong?” I snap back.

He pulls me into his arms and holds me close, then he takes a step back but takes my hands in his. “I can prove to you that your dad is selling drugs. There are boxes and boxes of them out in that building.” He points out the window, and I know what building he is referring to.

I sigh. “Logan, that building has been empty for years.”

He walks to the door. “Let’s go check it out right now. I need you to believe me.”

I don’t understand why he’s being like this, but maybe if he sees the empty building, he’ll come to his senses.

“Fine.” We walk out of the house and toward the building.

The air is chilly, and neither one of us has a jacket. I rub my arms but warm up fast due to our fast pace. When we arrive at the building, Logan opens the doors. And inside, there is nothing. Just as I told him.

He looks from left to right and then runs to the back. “The other day, there were a lot of boxes in here. And they were filled with pills. I swear to you.”

I sniffle, not even trying to hold back my tears. “Why are you doing this?”

He falls to his knees. “I’m not lying, Delaney, I swear. We can call my brother, and he’ll tell you.”

I shake my head and back up. “No.” For all I know, he’d call one of his buddies who would lie.
