He hugs me back. “You know I only want the best for you, right? I love you, Delaney.”

“I love you, too, Dad.”

“I need to head out for a dinner meeting. Talk it over with Logan, and then he and I can discuss the details.”

He walks out of my room, and I fall back on my bed. This really is going to work out, and the best part is I don’t have to leave everyone and everything I know behind.

I call Logan, and again, it goes to voicemail. “Dammit!” I toss my phone onto my bed.

Duke pops his head in my bedroom door. “Something wrong?”

I sit up. “Logan said he was picking up a couple of things at the grocery store and would be right back. That was three hours ago. Every time I call his phone, it goes to voicemail.”

My brother steps inside the room. “Do you think something happened to him?”

“I do. I’m worried.”

“I can drive us to the store and back, see if we can find him.”

I jump up. “Thank you. Let’s go.”

We run down the stairs.

“Hey, Duke, thanks again for talking to Dad. Whatever you said must have really sunk in. He just told me he’d offer Logan a job when he gets out of the service, and he’d buy us a place to stay. Can you believe it?”

Duke stops mid-step. “He said he would employ Logan?”

“He did. Isn’t that amazing?”

Duke continues down the steps. “I’m really surprised, actually.”

When we get to the bottom of the stairs, the door opens, and Logan walks in.

“You’re here?”

He smiles. “Just got back.”

I glance at his hands, and he’s not holding anything. “Did you buy groceries?”

His smile drops. “No. I was going to, but then my brother called and needed to talk.”

“Your brother?” Duke asks. “How many siblings do you have?”

Logan frowns. “Just the one brother.”

I wrap my arms around Logan and hug him tight. “Is your brother all right?”

“He will be.” He steps back. “Where are you two racing off to?”

“To find you. I called, but it kept going to voicemail.”

He fishes his phone out of his pocket. “Yeah, sorry. I didn’t check calls when I was talking to my brother. But I’m fine and here now.”

Duke claps him on the shoulder. “Well, glad you’re all right. I have plans tonight that I need to be getting to. You all right?” he asks me.

I smile. “I’m good. Thanks again for the offer to drive.”

“No problem. Have fun, you two.” Duke walks past us and out the front door.
