“It is. I’ve missed you guys so much.”
“We’ve missed you.”
I wipe away the tears from under my eyes. I hadn’t expected Duke’s voice to make me so emotional. “Are you safe?”
“I’m fine. Sam and I are in Hawaii on vacation. Leo and I have been working on clearing everything up so you can come home.”
“What do you mean?”
He chuckles. “The less you know, the better. Once it’s safe, can I call you back at this number?”
“No. You won’t be able to reach me.”
He sighs. “Okay, then call me in a few days. Promise?”
I won’t be able to call him, but he won’t hang up until I do. “I promise.”
Then I end the call before he can hear me crying and knows I’m lying. I try to stop crying, but I can’t. I lie back on the bed and take several deep breaths to calm myself. If I only have a small amount of time left with Logan, I don’t want to spend it crying in a bedroom.
I take several more deep breaths, and I get my emotions under control. But then the front door opens. Logan is in the kitchen, so who the hell is coming in the front door?
CHAPTER34
Logan
“Thank you for bringing this up.”I take the burner phone from Ozzie. “How’d you get here so fast?”
“I wasn’t too far from here when you called.”
My friend is avoiding my eyes.
“What’s going on?” I ask.
He shrugs. “I needed a drive to think, and I always enjoy the drive out this way.”
“Anything you want to talk about?”
Ozzie chuckles. “No, you got enough going on. Speaking of, are you going to tell me what you have planned? Because if it is what I think it is, one of you two is going to get caught.”
Delaney walks out of the back bedroom, her eyes red-rimmed. I walk to her.
“What’s going on?”
“I called Duke. I miss my family despite everything.”
I wrap my arms around her. Although I can’t understand why anyone would miss Duke, I do get being separated from your family. It’s hard not being near Brian sometimes.
“Hey, I have something for you.” I take her hand and lead her to the kitchen counter where I left the phone.
“It’s a burner phone that has a set number of minutes. If you really want to call Duke or me, you can. It’s not traceable, well, not easily,” I explain.
“Thank you,” she says.
“So, what’s the plan?” Ozzie says. “Are we driving her back to wherever she lives now?”
Delaney shakes her head. “No, I spoke to Brian, and he says that my new identity has been compromised, and I can’t go back.”
She can’t go back, and she can’t stay here forever.
