“Mayor Sinclair,” Walker says.

My mouth drops open. “That was the mayor?” Now that I think about it, he did resemble his sister, Janet, from the library.

Walker nods.

“Fuck, Walker!” Harding yells. “You know better than to do that.”

Walker throws his hands into the air. “We needed more than I could get, and we both know it.”

“The things he said to that other man…” I replay it in my mind. “He shouldn’t be mayor.”

“What other man?” Harding asks, turning her attention away from Walker.

“Clark,” Walker says.

Harding blows out a breath. “Ruiz’s number two guy?” She shakes her head at Walker but then turns back to me. “How did you hear them? Did Walker leave you in that room?”

“No, I placed her next door.”

“I had no idea that man was Janet’s brother.”

Harding leans against the table. “Who is Janet?”

I explain how Janet essentially runs the library and all the rumors about how her family runs the town.

“Small town?” Harding asks.

I shrug. “Sort of. Although being a suburb of San Diego means it isn’t too small.”

“What did you hear him say?” Harding asks.

I meet her gaze. “He was asking that other guy, Clark, to kill someone for him. Why would a mayor do that?” I ask.

Harding runs her hand through her hair. “Shit. You heard the mayor setting up a hit on someone? Do you remember who?”

“He kept saying Summer. ‘Can you take out Summer? I need him gone by tomorrow.’ I wasn’t sure if that was a real name or a codename.”

“Summer?” Walker confirms.

I nod.

“I’ll be back. Wait here,” Harding says as she runs out of the room, and Walker follows.

“This is bullshit!” Brian says. “I know what she’s going to suggest, and I’m not leaving Sofia and the baby!”

“So, you’ll stay here and die instead?” Ozzie asks. “This is bigger than just you, you know.”

Brian frowns.

“Hey, did you not just hear what Delaney overheard? We might have several huge issues here,” Logan says.

Ozzie kicks his feet up onto the table. “Well, the fact they are going after Brian and they know he has a brother and his name, is pretty serious to me.” He turns to Brian. “They’ll come after him to get to you. Just as Ruiz did today. And they’ll go after Delaney to get to Coff to get to you. They’ve already shown they will.”

I stand and pace in the small space at the end of the table, focusing on this problem because I can only handle one at a time. “Then we have to take out Ruiz and his second in command,” I say as I stop and face the group.

Durango’s brow shoots up. “I thought you worked in an office. Is there something more about you I should know?”

I glance at Logan, and he shakes his head.
