Unknown:Logan.

My heart rate picks up. Is it really him?

Me:How did you know I got a new phone?

Logan:This might sound creepy, but it isn’t, I swear.

I laugh as I wait for his next message.

Logan:I asked Trip to let me know if he got any hits on your phone number. And he just messaged me saying it was reactivated.

Okay, yes, that is Logan.

Me:Wow. I literally just got it minutes ago. I don’t know whether to be impressed or creeped out.

Logan:Told you Trip was good at what he does. And I vote for impressed.

I’m grinning like a fool just texting this man. But what does this mean?

Me:So why were you stalking my phone number?

Logan:Why does everyone use that word? I was not stalking you.

Interesting.

Me:Who’s everyone?

Logan:It doesn’t matter. What matters is I want to talk to you. Can I call?

My stomach flutters at the idea of hearing his voice.

Me:Yes.

I barely have the message sent and my phone is ringing.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Hey,” Logan says.

I lean back in my chair, grinning. I feel like a teenager whose crush just called. “What do you want to talk about?”

“I didn’t like how things ended with us. I’m sorry I didn’t get it. But I understand you don’t want to give up everything to move here when we don’t know if this will last.”

His words surprise me.

“I want to propose something else.”

“Okay, I’m curious.” I hold my breath, wondering what he came up with.

“Let’s date.”

I stare out the window as I process what he said. But we live in separate states, so I’m not sure what he’s thinking. “How? You’re still in New York, and I’m still here.”

“That’s true. I thought we could talk on the phone and maybe talk over FaceTime and get to know each other again. In a couple of weeks, I can fly out to see you as long as I’m not out on an assignment.”

I sit up straight. “I don’t really know much about your job. How often do you have assignments, and how long are they?”

“They vary. The longest I’ve had was a few months, but usually, they are a week at a time.”
