When Ezra spots me, all the blood drains from his face. But his date gives me a beaming smile and drags him across the room.
She’s not exactly who I pictured Ezra with. Her dirty blonde hair is pulled into a tight bun, and she’s wearing wire-rimmed glasses and baggy clothes. Even though she has an awkward vibe, she’s really pretty.
And probably too sweet for that asshole.
She waves at me. “Hi. I’m Abigail.”
Say something.
“I’m Roxy.” Um… What the hell do I say? “I’m one of the cheerleaders on the squad.” Or at least I was.
Ezra frowns and points at me like I’m an equation he needs to solve. “This is Coach’s daughter. She, uh, she always checks on everyone.”
I raise an eyebrow. That’s what he’s going with?
She snorts and smacks his chest. “If you had just let me visit you at school to meet all your friends over the years, this wouldn’t be so weird.”
Over the years?
I turn that statement over in my head. Over the fuckingyears?
“So tell me, Abigail, how long have you two been dating?” I watch the asshole’s face as I ask the question. He has the decency to look like he wants to hightail it out of here. He shoves his pitch-black hair out of his eyes and glances away.
I used to be so enthralled with his eyes. They’re a unique shade of brown that turn green at the edges. Now I look at them and see lies piled on more lies.
Abigail gives him a sweet smile. “Since high school. I always knew he was the one.” She waves her left hand at me where a diamond sparkles on her finger. My mouth drops open, and she giggles. “I know! Isn’t it awesome?”
I peel my tongue off the roof of my mouth before I choke on it. “Congrats. That’s…” Unexpected. Twisted. Fucked up beyond belief. “So cool.”
She hops up and down and hugs me. I pat her on the back awkwardly, and when Ezra sees us, he flinches.Yeah, you should be uncomfortable, asshole. You made me the other woman, and I hate cheaters!
I narrow my eyes at him and hope he can read the curses exploding in my head.
I clear my throat. “I just wanted to drop by to say congrats.” I look Ezra straight in the eye. “I’m sure my father will be delighted when he hears the news.”You’re going down, motherfucker.
His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows.
Turning, I hug Abigail again. “You know what? Why wait for an invite from Ezra to visit Lone Star State? We should swap numbers, and you can come and stay with me.”
She flails her arms. “That would be amazing!”
Ezra’s nostrils flare, and I smile. He fucked with the wrong girl.
Poor Abigail needs the truth before she marries this douchebag. I’m not the only girl he slept with last semester. According to the report the clinic sent me, he didn’t give me any STDs, thank God. But I always made him wear a condom even though he whined about wanting to rawdog it.
For the record, any moron who says things like “rawdog it” should be immediately kicked out of your bed. I know this now.
I’m not sure how one of his swimmers got through, but since he’s the only person I’ve been with in the last year, I don’t have any doubt he’s the donor.
After Abigail and I swap numbers, she wanders off to greet other guests. Pausing in front of Ezra, I lower my voice. “You are dead to me, asshole.”
“I can explain, Rox.” He leans down, trails his finger over my wrist, and whispers, “Let me stop by your place tomorrow night. We’ll grab a bite. Maybe go for a drive.”
Is he really propositioning me for sex at his damn engagement party? “Go for a drive” was our code for naked activities.
Laughter spills out of me. I can’t explain why, but all I can think is that I’m possibly hysterical and definitely hormonal. “Fuck you. I hope your dick falls off.”
I mean every word.
