It’s Christmas Eve, so snagging some last-minute pastries might be a pipe dream, but Maggie’s been craving them. I’m getting the boys out of her hair for a few hours, and this seemed like a good time to sneak out for a snack.
“Olly!” some guy shouts from the back of the cafe.
I wave. Having an undefeated season has sent fans into overdrive. I’m pretty psyched about it myself, but juggling baby duty has helped me stay grounded.
I’m waiting in line when someone clears her throat.
“Hi, Olly.”
And there goes my good mood. “Amelia.”
Thankfully, she moved out of Maggie’s casita, so we don’t have to deal with her craziness anymore.
“Listen, I’m not going to take up your time,” she says. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry for any drama I caused you and Maggie.”
“’K. Thanks.”
“I heard you got to the hospital in time for the birth.”
I nod, wanting to keep this brief. “Sienna told her dad, who flew me home.”
“I know. She told me.”
Surprised, I finally face her. “I didn’t think you two were friends.” As far as I know, Sienna hates Amelia.
“When I called her to tell her Maggie was in labor, we put our differences aside. Don’t get me wrong—we’ll never be best buds or anything. But we’re over our shit.”
My attention snags on that first detail. Maggie told me Amelia went with her to the hospital, but we always assumed that Bash somehow got in touch with Sienna. “That was you? You’re the one who told Sienna that I needed to get home?”
“Sebastian and I came up with that plan, but I knew how to get in touch with Sienna.” Amelia gives me a sad smile. “See, once in a while I do something right.”
Damn. That’s kind of a big deal. “Thank you. Really. From the bottom of my heart.”
Her smile grows. “Tell Maggie I’m glad she had her Oompa-Loompas.” She peeks into the carriage. “Aww. Y’all aren’t squishy at all. Look at those handsome faces.”
I chuckle. “They were a little squishy at first.”
She takes a step back. “Merry Christmas, Olly. Good luck in the playoffs.”
“Thanks, Amelia. Merry Christmas.”
After I snag the last three pastries, I book it home to find my beautiful baby mama fresh out of the shower. “Hey, gorgeous. Your men have missed you.”
She smiles at the little dudes in my arms. “Were you good for Daddy?”
I never get tired of hearing that word. Daddy.
“They saved the exploding diapers for when we got home, so yes. I changed them downstairs.” As I hand her Jude, I mention running into Amelia and my revelation that she’s the reason Sienna’s dad tracked me down.
Maggie gasps. “Are you serious?” She’s quiet for a long stretch. “Now I feel bad for kicking her out of the casita.”
“Let’s not get crazy. She needed to move on, but helping us like that was pretty cool.” My eyes travel over her. Maggie looks more rested than I’ve seen her in a while. “How was your appointment?”
I’m curious because she didn’t want me to go with her for some reason.
A huge grin spreads on her face. “It went well. In fact, I have a surprise for you after we get the boys to bed.”
“Speaking of surprises, I have one for you too.” I put Levi in his crib, and Maggie puts his brother next to him. “Have you given any thought to your schedule next semester?”
