He smiled. “Thank you. Tisch always picks out terrible cakes. Her reasons are that we aren’t supposed to be enjoying it.”

My eyes bulged. “I’m sure your brother would have wanted you to enjoy his cake.”

“That’s what I said.”

After a moment of what felt awkward to me, I bit my lip and took his hand. “I’m sorry again. And um…maybe when I stop killing the mood every time we’re together, we can hang out again.”

He laughed and leaned in, giving me a peck on the cheek. “You’re absolutely perfect.”

He turned to leave and then as if remembering something, turned to me. “Hey did Josh say his kid’s name is Brody?”

“Yep. Brody Davenport.”

He nodded. “That was the other name I saw on the prelim selection.”

I didn’t realize I was still smiling until it was wiped off my face.

It was still botheringme hours later after dinner, how Jax ended up on the prelim selection list.

It was no coincidence that Brody would. Did the Coaches know?

Jax was good out there. Not perfect. But good. He had to have made it on his own. Not because his father was in the league.

Sam kept asking me why it mattered if at the end of the day, Jax would be happy and that it was far better than disappointment and waiting months for the next tryout.

“I guess when you put it that way,” I pouted. “But how will I know?”

She shrugged. “Just ask.”

“Do you think Logan picked up on it?”

“I think he’d be an idiot if he didn’t find that highly questionable. Especially if Brody was on it. And everyone knows his father.”

“Good thing Jax has my last name.”

“Not that I don’t disagree, but why is that a good thing in this instance?”

“Because of people recognizing the name,” I pointed out obviously.

“What people?” she pressed with a grin.

“All the people.” I stood to clear our plates.

She rolled her eyes. “Fine. Hey, where did Jax go? Maybe we can all watch a movie?”

“Playing online video games. I’ll let him know to wrap it up while you pick something out.”

The doorbell rang and Sam and I exchanged looks. I went to open it. If it was Max again, Sam would likely lose her shit with him. No one intimidated this girl.

I pulled the door open and it was almost worse. Josh was there. This couldn’t be good. Was he here because of Logan? I reminded myself that it was none of his business regardless of what he had to say about it.

He eased my worry a bit with his warm smile and that was when I noticed Brody behind him.

“Oh hello,” I said to them both.

“Hey, sorry to stop in like this.” He held up a familiar bag. “I think this might belong to Jax.”
