Okay. She wasn’t in the mood. I let it go and then felt a buzzing.

Tisch: You?

Me: I’m good if you’re good. Dinner at my place later?

She responded with an annoyed emoji first. Then…

Tisch: I’ll bring the cake.

Like she had a choice.

I put my phone away and walked into the YHC. It was Sunday morning, the day of the tryouts. The place was packed and I slipped on my black cap again.

Today of all days, I didn’t need the attention. Good or bad.

But I had to be here for them.

Rayne and Jax sat on one of the back rows of the two sections blocked off for parents and children to settle. Jax was already dressed, and Rayne looked a complete mess. A gorgeous mess with light ripped jeans, sneakers, and a fitted white sweater. Her blond hair looked like it hadn’t seen a brush in days, but alluring nonetheless.

She was clearly not ready to send her kid out there.

“Someone looks ready,” I approached them, addressing Jax.

She looked up, there was a spark in her eye and a small smile. Then she blinked a few times and turned her face down, no doubt remembering the last time we were together and the sweet way she trembled in my arms when she came hard onto my fingers.

God that was the wrong image to have right now. I settled behind them on the last bench, adjusting my jeans to try and settle my cock.

Rayne’s smile faded and she glanced around nearly every corner of the arena.

“Hi Logan,” the cheerful little voice greeted me. “You made it.”

“I told you I wouldn’t miss this, you’re going to do great.”

He looked to his mother as if checking for reassurance. Then she nodded with a grin.

“Thank you. For teaching me to play—and skate and stuff. I wouldn’t have been here without you,”

My brows jumped and my smile was wide. I gave a guilty looking Rayne a pointed look and she shrugged. “Big words for a little guy.” Before I could do anything to stop it, my big hands reached out and grasped either side of his little head, giving him a light tug. “It was my pleasure to help you, but you got this far all on your own.” I wiggled his padded arms. “You used these,” and then his legs “and these, just right. You’re determined and seriously talented—and fast.” I glanced at Rayne who nodded. “And that scares me a little.”

Jax laughed and his shoulders relaxed.

I flicked his chin. “And if anyone should be thankful, it’s me. And I’ll tell you why later, okay?” I winked and he nodded eagerly.

“Okay.” He turned to his mother. “Mom should I go down now?”

“Umm…” she looked below to the gathering of children on the bottom row. Her eyes wandered past, scanning various parts of the section and beyond. Something was distracting her.

When she lost focus, I helped her out. “Yeah, I think they’re taking the names down and assigning numbers. You should probably get down there.”

He nodded to both of us and raced down. Rayne yelled out the word “mouthguard” on his way down and he threw his thumb up in the air in response.

I chuckled when she stiffened and settled in next to her. “He’s not going to lose his teeth today, sweetheart.”

She shot me a glare. “Don’t judge me.” She glanced at my fly. “By the way, d’you take care of the little problem you had a minute ago?” she covered her giggle.

I adjusted again. “You notice that, huh?”

“Oh I did. You know what happens when you can’t laugh out loud?”
