But Remnant did not, her eyes snapped open and she stiffened in my arms, her inhibitions returned as she gently pressed away from me.

I followed, dropping my forehead to hers, my heavy breathing blowing the loose strands of her hair away from her gorgeous face. I couldn’t help but search her eyes for any regret or worse…rejection.

“This isn’t over with.” I whispered only for her ears.

Remnant’s brow furrowed and her eyes searched for the same thing as mine…regret. She wouldn’t find it. There was nothing I would ever regret when it came to her.

She exhaled. “It should not have even started, shifter.”

“It was inevitable, my little umbra.” I softly whispered and brushed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “You owed me that kiss anyway.”

Her eyes widened and I grinned, slowly unwrapping her legs from my body and setting her safely onto the ground. Leaning over, I tucked back a strand of her blood soaked hair, watching the emotions war across her face, her soul gluing itself back together, and her heart awakening from the cold shell it had been frozen in.

Another throat clearing. “Your majesty?”

Snarling, I spun. “What the fuck is so goddess damn important that you can’t handle it yourself, General Tyr?”

Tyr straightened his large tattooed covered body. His eyes darted to my soulmate before looking back at my angered state. “Apologies my king but it’s your protocol to give you a status report after battle, no exceptions.”

“Then fucking give it, General.” I snarled, more angry at my own damn rules than anything else.

He didn’t hesitate. “All our people are accounted for, no losses thank the goddess. A few minor injuries that Quinn has been able to heal, the more seriously injured are being escorted back to the master healer by Penina and Eshe. Not a single wraith survived nor are there any sightings of spycrows.” He snickered and winked behind me to Remnant. “Thank you for that, beauty.”

I hissed at him. I was in no mood for his flirting with my soulmate.

Remnant snorted. “You’re welcome for that, shifter.”

Subduing my animalistic nature, I raked my hands through my hair. “Have Penina and Eshe check in on the people within the city afterwards. Our people need to be reassured they are safe in their own homes.”

He scowled. “We did well but truth be told, we were not prepared for an attack of this scale. We don’t have the numbers for any larger attack, especially with spy crows involved.”

“I know.”

His lip peeled up in a silent snarl, stretching the silver piercings. “The queen is here for both of them.”

My face crinkled. I knew what I had to do. “I know.”

My beast read my mind.“These attacks won’t stop and the next one will be larger as the gateway weakens. We must bring the battle to them.”

Tyr growled and shook his shaven head. “If it wasn’t for beauty handing them their asses, this could have been much worse.”

I turned and looked at the shadow fae who was now caressing her shadows like a pet cat, silently listening to our conversation.

“I know.” I said sincerely.

Remnant’s dark head raised and her brows arched—she was expecting a different answer but I knew my soulmate's worth even if she did not.

Dragoon and Chin stepped up and cleared their throats.

Remnant turned and flung her arms around them in greeting. Pulling away she gripped their shoulders proudly. “You both were amazing!”

Xi smiled. “And look, no pink hair!”

They laughed and I glanced over at Tyr who just shrugged. I didn’t miss the increased attention my friend had looking at Xi’s exposed face.

Remnant looked over her shoulder. “Am I dismissed, your majesty?”

I snorted. “You’re willing to follow orders now, after directly ignoring them earlier?”
