My friend lifts his eyes to mine. His face is white as a sheet and he looks as if he’s about to vomit all over the bar.

“It was me.”

“You…?” I shake my head confused.

“The… Reason. It was me.”

“The reason for what?”

He tries to swallow, and I watch his Adam’s apple move up and down.

“The reason Mila disappeared.”

“What the hell are you saying?”

“She was with me.”

I open my mouth to speak, but shock has clouded my thoughts.

“Mila and I… We’ve been seeing each other.”

“No!”

“We actually… Er… Slept together. A few times.”

“I can’t believe this.”

“But it’s never been serious.”

“Because you’re a bastard, that’s why!”

“And last night, when Ethan asked her to marry him, Mila panicked and came running to me.”

“And you didn’t think to let Sean know?”

“Mila didn’t want him to know about us.”

“Mila didn’t?”

“It’s true,” he protests weakly.

“Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” I step closer so that the bartender, just a few paces away, won’t hear me. “She’s your best friend’s sister!”

“I know, I know.”

“And you… You’re sleeping with her?” I ask through my teeth.

“It’s not how it seems.”

“Then how is it, Jake?”

“I’m in love with her.”

“You’re what?”

“I’ve always loved her.”

I push away from the bar and rub my face. “Oh, Jesus Christ.”
