He shakes his head and points over to his car.

“Come on. We can’t waste any more time.”

“Don’t worry. Just let me know if you hear from her. Thanks.”

I let the phone drop into my lap and slump back into the car seat.

“No news?” Eric asks, sitting beside me.

“Nothing. She hasn’t heard from her for days. I’ve called everyone I know – I don’t know what else to do. We’ve scoured the entire city, all the places she goes. It’s as if she’s just vanished into thin air.”

Eric rests his hand on my thigh. His fingers squeeze me gently and my muscle tenses at his touch. I lift my head and turn to face him, his eyes as warm as the setting sun instantly hooking me.

“We’ll find her.”

I sigh nervously before grabbing my phone and calling Jake again.

“Who are you calling?” Eric asks.

“I’m going to try Jake again. I don’t understand what the hell he’s doing.” The phone rings out again. “He usually calls me back whenever I leave a message.”

“And you think Jake might know where she is?”

“I doubt it, but he knows her. He might help us find her.”

I take off my glasses and drop them into my lap with my phone, rubbing at my eyes.

“How many hours before you can report a missing person?” I ask.

“The same number of hours as before,” he says gently. “We only went to the police station a few hours ago.”

“Sorry, you’re right.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for. I can’t imagine how you feel right now.”

I look over at him again when we’re stopped at a red light.

“It isn’t the first time this has happened.”

“What?”

“It’s not the first time Mila has disappeared for a few hours.”

“Does she often run off like this?”

“She doesn’trun off, exactly, she just… Hides. My sister is a unique person.”

“Unique how?”

“She can be difficult to understand. She has these… Moments.”

“Moments of confusion?”

“Something like that.”

The car starts again and Eric fixes his gaze on the road.
