He shrugs, grabbing his pint and taking a sip.

“I have to head back into the kitchen. Duty calls,” Eric informs us.

“Don’t worry, you don’t need to stay,” I reassure him.

“But you and Mila can stay,” Eric says suddenly.

“For dinner, you mean?” I ask.

“Why not? I’m sure we can find you a free table.”

“I don’t know…”

“Do you have other plans?” He asks.

“Absolutely not!” I respond, too enthusiastically. “I’m free. We both are.” I try to calm down, but it’s not easy.

Eric is more charming tonight that he ever has been.

He’s like a fine wine; he gets better day after day.

“I have no plans tonight, either,” Jake says.

“No one asked you!” Eric retorts, making me laugh. “I’ll go see whether we can find you a table.”

“We can stay here,” I say.

“At the bar?” he asks.

“You can eat at the bar, right?”

“Of course.”

“I always eat at the bar,” Jake says, but no one listens.

“As soon as Mila comes back, I’ll send someone over for your order,” Eric says.

“I trust you.”

“Are you sure?”

God, yes. I’d trust you with anything; even with my heart.

I nod.

“I’ll take care of your dinner, then.”

“Thanks,” I say, stupidly moved.

“See you later.” Eric walks off and I find myself sighing like a lovesick teenager whose crush has just spoken to them for the first time.

“You trust him, do you…?” Jake brings me quickly back to reality.

“Shut up.”

“And yet you don’t like him.”

“Are you done?”
