“Sorry,” I sighed. “I’m just so tired and wanted a piggyback ride,” I admitted softly.
“Just because I’m skinny doesn’t mean I can’t carry you,” he huffed and stopped walking. He crouched down.
“What are you doing?”
“Hop on. I’ll give you a free ride since I feel sorry for you. You look like death warmed over.”
“Greggory!” I laughed.
“I’m just saying,” he shrugged. “Now hop on before I change my mind.”
“You’re the bestest.”
I stood behind him then wrapped my arms around his neck. He stood up slowly. Surprisingly, he didn’t tumble over. For safety reasons, I wrapped my legs around him and held on for dear life.
“Kaylee, you’re acting like a scared cat. Stop choking me,” Greggory gasped.
“Sorry.” I let up some tension from around his neck. Didn’t need the poor guy passing out. “Better?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
He walked down the hallway with me holding onto him like a baby sloth. I rested my head on his back. People stared but I didn’t care. I was exhausted and enjoyed the little break my body was getting.
Greggory opened the doors, and walked us outside. The bright sun caused me to wince and groan.
“If you hiss, I’m putting a stake through your heart, Miss Vampire,” Greggory said, making me giggle.
“Not a vampire. Just an exhausted woman, who needs a month of nothing but sleep.”
“Well, tell that man of yours to help you out, cause mama needs some sleep, girl,” he laughed, glancing briefly at me over his shoulder.
“He does. I just can’t seem to get enough sleep no matter what I do.”
“Well you-- Hey! There’s your man now and… O-M-G!” Greggory squealed-- like a kid who just ran into Santa Clause-- and took off running down the steps with me on his back.
“Greggory!” I whacked his arm. “You’re going to make me throw up.”
He ignored me. He didn’t stop running until we stood next to the car. He quickly put me down on my feet.
“Hey, Greggory,” Gerald chuckled.
“Hello. Let me hold the baby,” he blurted, reaching out for Sophie. Gerald and I both laughed. “Sophie, you beautiful princess, come to Uncle Greggory.”
Sophie was the precious gift the world had given Gerald and me. We had named her after Gerald’s grandmother. It was a beautiful name. Plus, it was Scottish and meant wisdom. And there was no doubt in Gerald’s or my mind that Sophie would grow up to be an intelligent little girl and woman. She was already observant and the doctors said she was ahead on her milestones.
She had come into the world with a head full of light brown hair, which stood out even more because of her olive-colored complexion. Her eyes also stood out. They were the perfect combination of blue and green. Everything about our daughter was perfect.
“Quit trying to spoil her,” Gerald laughed then handed Sophie over to Greggory. He immediately snuggled up to her, kissed her forehead, and cooed at her.
“Of course, I’d spoil my favorite girl,” Greggory smiled down at Sophie, who looked up at him with her hazel-blue eyes.
Who would have known that one simple wish would bring me so much happiness?
“I give up,” Gerald sighed in defeat. “Well, come here my second favorite girl?”
Gerald held out his arms to me, making me laugh. I walked over to him and he wrapped his arms around me.
“How were your classes?” he asked, smiling down at me.
