Did I not just say it’s complicated?Blowing out a breath, I meet her gaze. “The first time we ever hooked up was the night we met; Spring break, my sophomore year at Duke.”
“And what? You’ve had an affair going on this entire time under your mother’s nose?”
“Oh my God, no!” This is horrific. “We didn’t do anything else until after I graduated.”
Except, you know, make out with one another the night before his wedding.Somehow, I think that’s better left unsaid. At least for right now.
Katie watches me imploringly for a moment, her brows pinched, lips pressed thin. Finally, she blurts out, “This is fucked up. You know that, right?”
A dry laugh falls from me. “Trust me, I fucking know, Katie. I’m not exactly proud of this.”
She grabs her phone. “I can’t do this right now. I just… can’t. I’m really disappointed, Elias.”
And then she leaves. Walks away without another word.
It’s as if my entire world crashed in on me in the matter of an hour. Something tells me there isn’t any coming back from this. Not this time.
Chapter Thirty-Four
Zeke Alvarez
The phone on my desk rings, startling me and breaking my concentration.
I grab it, bringing it up to my ear. “What?”
“Hello, sir.” My assistant’s nauseatingly friendly voice greets me. “There is a Miss Katie Breslin here to see you. I don’t see she has an appointment.”
“Fuck,” I hiss under my breath.
“Sir?”
“Send her back.” My tone is clipped, and I slam the phone down before Daphne has a chance to respond.
Should’ve known this was coming. It’s been almost a week since she caught me over at their house. Elias is back to ignoring me, which really fucking pisses me off. This little cat-and-mouse game is getting really old, real fast.
I need to figure my shit out with Valerie, because I can’t keep doing this.
The door to my office swings open, in walking Katie.
“Ma’am,” Daphne huffs, following behind her. “You cannot just barge into Mr. Alvarez’s office.”
“Daphne, it’s fine,” I assure her, shooting a glowering look Katie’s direction. “Thank you, that will be all.”
The door closes with a soft click and Katie whips around, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “I have some fucking words for you,Ezekiel Alvarez,” she spits out, all the fire and venom, especially when she uses my full fucking government name.
Sitting back, I rest my elbow on the chair, rubbing my chin with my fingers. “Oh, I can’t wait to hear it,” I deadpan.
“You think this is funny?” She enunciates the wordfunny. “You’ve got some fucking nerve.”
“Do you see me laughing, Katie?” Gesturing my hand in front of me, I add, “Why don’t you have a seat. Unless, of course, you’d rather stand and yell at me.”
Glowering at me, she sits down with a huff.
If looks could kill…
“What in the actual hell is wrong with you?” she spits out.
“You should try not sticking your nose into other people’s business, Katie.”
