“Yeah. But it’s for the actual children.”
He walked over to it anyway, peeking over the edge. “Kids are asleep. I’m taking one.”
I laughed. “You might not be so bad, Fernandez.”
He glowered, but it wasn’t the same with sour candy tucked into his cheek. “That’s not the compliment you think it is.”
“It’s all the compliment you’re gonna get from me.” My vision caught on two forms walking their way through the shop. Leaning over I got the door. “Looks like you can calm your tits. Your girl’s back.”
He didn’t even spare me a glance, his eyes were glued. I didn’t blame him, though. I had my own attention snatcher refusing to let me look anywhere but at her legs in that getup. I would stare at them for hours if her face wasn’t pulled into a worrisome frown that caught more of my attention instead.
“What’s wrong?” I was surprised to hear I wasn’t the only one asking this. My new buddy had also noticed the odd vibe as the girls walked through the door.
Alta gave us both a curious look before leading the other girl directly into her brother’s arms. “Take her home. She’s not feeling well.”
“Sick?” Ox asked, and something about him seemed to stiffen into an uncharacteristic sort of panic.
Alta noticed it too and rushed to shake her head. “No. Sad. She was crying. Take her home, Ox.”
He looked down at his wife, frown deep, eyebrows deeper. “Que pasa?”
She shook her head, hiding it in his chest. He speared Alta witha look so sharp I almost wanted to guard her from it. But I realized he was just worried. “What about?”
“She wouldn’t say.” Alta chewed her lip nervously. Those big eyes were even bigger, wet as if she was going to cry too. “But she kept mentioning a yellow room?”
Understanding seemed to light his eyes, his hand rubbing high along his wife’s back. He slid a finger underneath the curtain of her hair, pushing it away and searching for her eyes. It was a gesture that seemed like it didn’t fit him somehow. Yet they were so natural together.
His voice was low, different, as he spoke to her. “Listas, Lunita?”
Her lip wobbled as she nodded. He nodded too, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. He found his sister next. “Thank you. For taking care of her and for inviting her. We’re heading out.”
“Ox…” Alta trailed off but her voice was hopeful, her eyes clearly wanting to know what was going on.
He shook his head. “Don’t pry, Al. Thank you for including us… Her. And great work here, this was really smart.”
She didn’t even look like she was breathing. I couldn’t tell if she was trying to hide it or not, but it was obvious his good opinion meant something to her.
Dark eyes settled on me, even as he was still addressing his sister. “And make sure Augustus here walks you back. I don’t want you walking around alone like that.”
Then they were gone.
“What was that all about?” she asked.
“What?”
“He called you Augustus like he knew you or something,” she said. “How does my brother know you?”
“Uh,” I scratched my neck. Did these people ever miss anything? “What do you think that was all about? Why was she crying?”
She didn’t take the bait immediately, giving me a long suspicious look, but eventually her excitement took over and a huge smile crossed her face. She moved, and I had to curb a moan as I felt her front press into my side, effectively rubbing up against me. I needed to stop thinking with my dick, because she was simply reaching up to whisper in my ear, not making a move.
“I think it had to do with babies!” she said excitedly.
I felt my own smile pull only because hers was so big. “I bet you can’t wait to be an aunt.”
She nodded enthusiastically, biting her lip. “No one likes to ask them because of Clementine’s… past. But I know he wants them. I wonder if they’re trying. I hope everything’s going okay.”
“You just can’t help it can you?” My thumb brushed against her cheek, my eyes taking in the pretty soft features of her face.
