Jasce shakes his head. “Nobody.”
Solomon scoffs at Jasce. “I’m not afraid of you,Hematite. Nor am I afraid of your whore.”
“Whore?” I sneer at him. “You are the bastard who beat your wife to death.”
“Is that what this is about?” He laughs. “She was mine to do with as I pleased.”
I grit my teeth as my blood boils. Before I can even think, I lunge at him, my hand connecting with his nose.
He staggers backward, holding his face as blood pours between his fingers.“You bitch!”
“You are not so tough now, are you?” Pain throbs through my hand as I plant my feet, getting ready for another punch.
Solomon swipes at his nose and straightens his shoulders. “Do you want to see how tough I am? Tell your fire boy to take a walk, and I’ll show you what Lila asked for.”
Anger blinds me as I think of Lila, at what she had suffered at this animal’s hands. At what Kassandra had suffered all those months ago in Astarobane.
I’ll be damned if I stand by idle again.
“Fire boy, go outside,” I say coldly.
“Sol,” Jasce says. “Wait!”
Even though Jasce’s words ring in my ears, I’m incapable of waiting or holding back my darkness.
Bloodstone warriors rode into my village and took Mother from me. Hatred took Kassandra. Abuse took Lila.
No more!
I scream out curses in the ancient Bloodstone tongue. “Curse you, Solomon! Die a painful death!”
Pain sears through my serpent mark asSolomon’s eyes widen and his body convulses. The man cowering in the corner collapses to the ground as his skin melts from his bones.
Solomon drops to his knees, clutching his throat. “Wh-what? H-how.”
He lets out a guttural groan as his face turns a deep shade of red and then purple as he collapses onto his side. He moans and cries out in agony as he curls into a fetal position.
“I thought you were Kyanite,” Jasce says as he stares coolly at the men, his tone unaffected by my savagery.
His words sting my ears, betray the part of me that desperately wants to be Kyanite.
Humor glints behind his black eyes as he stares at me. “You’re his little weapon.”
Little?
I lift my chin. “I’m n—”
The door crashes open, splintering into pieces as Hector and Kheldar step into the room.
ChapterForty-Seven
Anger smolders in Hector’s eyes—enough anger to destroy the entire building if he wanted to.
“Do you know how long I have been looking for you?” he asks, frustration lashing from his words.
I take a step back and open and close my mouth.
Hector’s gaze jerks to Jasce. “Leave us!”
