“Yes,” Matt pointed out, “But we don’t know that Marguerite is crazy about you.” He looked quite pleased by the idea.

“Well,” Rose said, looking from under her lashes at Matt, “we can find out when we head down to Hidden Falls to attend the fair and see my family.”

Matt stared at her. “What’s thiswe?”

“Iris asked me to come down for a visit. And Mom’s the chair of the Fall Fair Harvest Fair Committee, God help Hidden Falls, and she’s planned one of her big family dinners. You know the way she loves a big family dinner. I was hoping you’d come with me.”

Matt shrugged. A man who can see that arguing is a waste of time. He said, “Well, at least I’ll be able to check out my little brother’s crush and see if there’s any hope.”

“Rose,” he appealed, “think of me not as Matt’s brother, but as the man who works hard to make you the best lamb souvlaki platter you have ever eaten. Don’t let him screw things up, and if you can find out anything about what she thinks of me? I’d really appreciate it.”

She nodded. “I’ll do my best.”

He gathered the empty plates together as the two doctors stood up to leave. Matt said, “Lunch was extra tasty today. Watching my brother squirm somehow added to the flavor.”

“I’ll add it to your tab.”
