Nadia
“Here, haveanotherlemondrop.” Delilah scooted another pretty drink in front of me.
It was in a martini glass, with sugar on the rim and a pretty little red flower on the side.
“It’s the ladies’ night favorite,” Anaki added, leaning on the bar. “That’s why they are half-price.”
I took a sip of the drink and smiled, enjoying the sweet and sour taste. I was still not used to it, but these ladies loved it.
“I think you’ve created a fan club here.” I laughed, looking around at all the women gathered around the bar. They all chatted and giggled with each other while sipping their drinks.
The atmosphere in the bar was different than usual, more inviting somehow. The bikers took their turn to be servers on the second Tuesday of the month. They were the eye candy for the unknowing human ladies of the town. It was another secret way for the guys to get closer to the women of the town and get to know them. They were sniffing them out, seeing if they were potential mates or not since their noses couldn’t smell as far as they used to.
“Scary bikers being turned into normal citizens of the town. It’s genius,” I said, impressed by how different this place had become since my first visit there just a few weeks ago.
It was a good tactic and was quite funny seeing them lean over, trying to sniff all the women’s hair without them noticing.
Anaki smiled knowingly and nodded his head in agreement before taking another order from one of the ladies at the bar. I glanced around at all these human women enjoying themselves and felt suddenly at ease, finally feeling like I belonged somewhere for once in my life.
I sipped my drink, letting the warmth slide down my throat. It didn’t taste like it would get me drunk; it tasted just like candy.
“Nadia, what did you do before you started working in the mansion? Did you go to school?” Journey asked as she took a sip.
Delilah and Journey sat close to me, and Anaki was never far from our group. He was in charge while our mates were downstairs checking on Locke. He wasn’t doing well, and Bear was going to find out just how bad off he was.
“I was actually finishing up my last year of training to be a midwife,” I said bashfully. “I always wanted a younger sister, and my mother never gave me one, so I played with baby dolls a lot. I guess I never got over it.”
And now I really knew why. It wasn’t safe. Their decision to not have children was because of me.
Delilah’s eyes widened, and she grasped my forearm. “Do you think you can deliver my baby?”
I leaned backward from her abruptness, and Journey burst out laughing.
“Easy, Dede, you are going to give Nadia a heart attack! Give her some space.”
“But it would make Hawke so much happier having Nadia do it. Can you imagine Bones looking at my hooha? Hawke won’t let him near me!” she squealed. “And Hawke won’t know what he is doing! Knowing him, his animal would take over and gnaw off the umbilical cord with his teeth.” Delilah showed off her fangs.
Journey and I made a collective gagging noise and threw back the rest of our drinks.
“I didn’t finish my training, though. I didn’t have all the hours—”
“I’m sure you got the gist of it.” Delilah waved dismissively. “I mean, you saw a few all the way through, right?”
“Well, yes…” my voice trailed.
“Then it’s settled. You get to deliver the baby.”
My face paled. It wasn’t just a baby I was delivering, but a shifter baby. I knew nothing about those types of pregnancies.
I cleared my throat. “Have you had any checkups or prenatal care?”
“Nope.” Delilah sipped her coke through her straw. “The pup kicks, though. Nice and strong.” She patted her tummy.
My mouth dropped.
“How far along are you?” I raised my eyebrow.
“Almost two months. So halfway.”
