Switch looked me up and down, his eyebrow raised.
“To find his dead mate. He was almost successful.” Bones fisted his hands together. “She killed herself, seeing how evil he was. She chose death rather than to supply a bond that would give him more power.”
Then why was he still living? Why was he alive?
His mate was dead, he couldn’t possibly live for hundreds of years without a mate, right? That’s how rogues going rabid worked?
My back popped, and I yipped in pain. My hand wrapped around my ribcage, it shuddered under my touch, and my stomach rolled as I retched my dinner.
I wiped the filth away from my lips. “God, I’m sorry.” I winced, my voice hurting my ears.
Tajah, Bones, and Switch talked frantically among themselves. The looks of concern and their helplessness made me feel guilty and sorrowful they had to watch this.
My knees hit the floor, and I cried out. I could feel my bones moving and cracking. And a terrible ringing in my ears took over my hearing. It was me and my body, hearing the bones crush and move.
I knew exactly what was happening as my body heated. Sweat dripped into my eyes and I finally fell to the cool floor.
I was shifting.
Time slowed.
Grim isn’t here; he isn’t here to help me.
The bodies around the room were slow compared to my movements. I rolled to my side, clutching my stomach, throwing up yet again, releasing all the food from my stomach.
Bones knelt beside me, his hand brushing my hair from my face, sympathy radiating from his eyes.
The cold cloth wiping down my face warmed instantly. Too hot, I was way too hot.
My fingers pulled at my sweater, the strands unraveling. My pants came next. I couldn’t understand my body movements, but I knew one thing, my fingers no longer had blunted nails.
My nails grew long, black, and were tainted with my blood. My body arched while I let out a blood-curdling scream that made the entire room wince in pain. The scream turned to howls and the howls into snarls.
The lights flickered in the room until we were covered in darkness.
Tiny pinpricks echoed painfully across my heated body until thick layers of fur rippled over my skin. I no longer had alabaster skin, it was tinged red with my blood from ripping through my clothes.
My mouth lengthened, which was by far the most painful part. My longer teeth, now fangs, pierced my bottom lip as my lower jaw tried to keep up with the upper.
My voice came out as a strangled cry, no longer able to speak in my human voice. Only whimpers, whines, and yips.
I was no longer a human, a being on two legs. My hands, now paws, told me that much.
My legs and paws were black. Sheens of blue were highlighted by the lone computer screen radiating its light. I blinked my enormous eyes. I could now see the tiniest particles of dust floating by.
My urge to move, to get to Grim becoming more urgent. I put one paw in front of the other, growling.
I wasn’t in control of this body, this enormous animal that was now a part of me. It was in charge, this other soul inhabiting me. I was in the passenger seat, yet I could feel every emotion that went through my wolf. I could feel the cold concrete beneath me, the anger radiating that our mate was trapped in a warehouse not too far from here.
A throaty grunt left our throat. I was in the passenger seat, but my thoughts were clear.
We needed to get to our mate. And fast.
Our lips lifted in a snarl, our colossal head swinging to the door.
Bones shook his head, his hand reaching for the handle.
My wolf didn’t like that.
