“The level of trust it takes to ask for a dark bond… How long have you two known each other?”
I glared at her. There was no way I could answer that question. The truth would be absurd, raising red flags. A lie would open us up to story inconsistencies.
A single knock rapped on the door. It opened without waiting for a response, saving my ass and revealing… a lawyer. Not my lawyer—Jasper was a multi-talented guy and had gone to law school after deciding being a doctor wasn’t his calling. This lawyer was much higher-powered, wearing a three-piece suit that cost upwards of five grand.
“I’m Ms. Winston’s legal representation.”
I had to hope I wasn’t paying him. I was on the high side of well-off, but my mother was the rich one.
Jennika stiffened, her face a mask of false niceness. “Ms. Winston didn’t make me aware she was waiting for her lawyer.”
“Now that I’m here, you’re going to need to leave and give me a moment with my client.”
She knew the law but took her sweet time getting up and gathering her paperwork together. Offering me a smile, she patted my cuffed hands again. “We’ll get back to the questions in a couple of minutes then.”
It was all I could do to resist another growl. The more erratic I seemed, the more likely I was to be condemned.
The door slammed behind her, leaving me alone with my new lawyer.
“Mercury send you?” I asked, leaning back in the chair. My cuffs jangled against the metal table.
“He informed me that getting you and your omega out of custody is my top priority, so I hope you haven’t made it harder for me to work. What did you tell her?”
He didn’t bother with introductions, and I didn’t care. The man was a lawyer way above my pay grade, and he’d get me back to Kiara. That was all that mattered.
I gave him a rundown of the last couple hours spent in this interrogation room with Jennika. Then he knocked on the door to indicate we were done, and sat down in the uncomfortable metal chair beside mine. “We’ll get you out of here within five hours. Probably two. Based on what they found down in the Omega Safety Division, they have no reason to hold you. If you want to sue, we can make it happen.”
Jennika opened the door before I could respond.
My grin wiped the smirk right off her face.
Bitch already knew she’d lost—and maybe gotten another demotion out of it too.
TWENTY-THREE
DASH
The Omega Safety Division was committed to—you guessed it!—omega safety. It would have been hypocritical as fuck if they’d kept Kiara against her will after they were finished with their questions. Selena, the big bitch in charge, seemed tempted to do it anyway.
When Kiara demanded to leave, though, she couldn’t say no.
I wouldn’t have been able to say no either.
My little omega was quite the actress. I’d heard the heaving sobs and begging from the office they’d stuck me in to wait.“Please, Selena, don’t make me stay here. I miss Leighton. What if my brother finds me here?”
I wasn’t sure what she’d said about her brother, but Kiara was smart enough to avoid mentioning her part in one of the bigger beta crime families in New Oxford.
A second later Kiara appeared from the room where she’d been getting her interview and rushed to me. She followed my scent so easily, it must have called to her like a beacon. We were meant for each other, definitely.
“Where’s Leighton?” she asked breathlessly when she entered the office.
Was I a little jealous she didn’t spend a moment simply being excited to see me? Yes, absolutely.
“On a different floor. Would you like me to take you there?”
“Please.”
“So polite,” I purred, standing and stretching.
