Shouldn’t you be in class

Call Me Jude@judeturner

Shouldn’t YOU?

Finny@finnparker

…I plead the fifth

As much as I wanted to continue texting Jude throughout the whole class, I had to put my phone away and listen for the whole period. At least I knew people on Twitter were almost definitely keeping him entertained while he was stuck outside. And as soon as Mrs. Kavinsky announced that we could have free time forthe rest of the period—twenty minutes early, thank goodness—I grabbed my backpack and made my way to the front of the room.

“Excuse me,” I said. Mrs. Kavinsky looked up from the papers she was grading and smiled at me.

“Yes, Miss Evans?” She glanced at my backpack. “Do you have to leave early?”

“Well, actually…” I said. I’d spent the whole period deciding which excuse was the most likely to get me out of class as quickly as possible, and I finally decided the truth was probably the best. “I was chosen to be the guide for one of the new students today—Jude Turner—and he lost his student card. He needs to go to the office for a new one, but he doesn’t know the procedure, so he was wondering if I could take him.”

Mrs. Kavinsky glanced at her watch. “Can you go at lunch? I’d hate for him to miss the end of his class if they’re going over anything important.”

“I have a cheer meeting at lunch that I can’t miss.” That was stretching the truth a little bit since the meeting wasn’t for the whole hour, and even if it was, I could probably get out of it for this, but I didn’t see any reason to waste my time doing that. Not to mention that Jude would be left outside for another twenty minutes for no reason. Not that it was overly cold or anything, but I would still feel bad just leaving him there for no reason. “And Jude said he checked with his teacher, and he said it was fine.”

Mrs. Kavinsky sighed and looked around the room. Pretty much everyone was surrounding Hudson’s desk and asking him questions, so it wasn’t like any studying was actually going on.

“Well, I suppose that would be fine. Just this one time,” she said.

“Thank you,” I said. I left quickly before she could change her mind.
