Twiddling my thumbs, I try to think of what I wanted to even say to him.

I can’t even remember now, with his rosewood scent taking me over and his eyes lingering on me.

“Did you have something to ask me?” He looks me over and steps closer. “Are you okay?”

“I just—” I take in a long breath. “I don’t even know.” I fling my hands in the air, feeling hurt and confused. “I’m confused, and I’m confused by why I am confused.” I huff out. “I don’t know what to do with this.” I gesture between us. “I—”

“Hey—” He places his finger over my lips, shushing me.

I scowl at him.

I don’t let him know that I’m also thankful to him for stopping my rambling, but I still don’t want to be quieted by him.

“I know this is”—he pauses—“a lot.”

“A lot? I’m falling for a guy who is about to have a bride.”

He cocks a brow at me and smiles widely. “You are falling for me, gorgeous?”

Rolling my eyes at him, I slap his chest. “I think you know that, and you just want me to repeat it.”

“Maybe.” He smirks. “But only ’cause I like to hear that you feel the same way.”

“Same way?”

My heart flutters at his confession.

“Now you just want to hear it again, don’t you?” He gives me a wink, and I can’t help but smile at him.

“Eden.”

A voice thunders down the hallway.

I turn to see Samuel standing at the end of the hallway, his fists on eachside of him.

“Samuel.” I swallow hard. “I was just congratulating Mr. Harris on his up-and-coming match for a wife.”

“Were you now?” he says flatly, eyes locked on Kameron as he approaches. “How kind of Mr. Harris to give you some of his time.”

Samuel pulls me to his side.

“I was just thanking yoursisterfor the kind words. I’m so thankful to the Divine.” He looks from me to Samuel with such a charming smile I have to stop myself from grinning at the sight of it. “And to you, Mr. Donovan. I should get back to my dinner.” Kameron bows his head before he takes down the hall back to the dining room.

“Interesting finding you here.” His hand tightens on my waist. “Alone.” He twists me, and I yelp at the pain that comes from it. “With him.” His front slams into mine as he holds me close to him.

“I was using the bathroom, Samuel.” I press my hands against his chest. “He came out of the men’s, and I congratulated him. That’s it. Relax.”

“Better be,” he growls as I shoot my gaze to him.

His face softens, and he places a kiss on my forehead, tugging me alongside him back to the dining room.

Ireturn to my seat reluctantly.

Even though I didn’t want to leave her there with Samuel, I had little choice.
