“Let me help you. Come on.”

Again, I smack his hand. “I said don’t. Touch. Me.” I peer at Lianne, who comes to aid me. “Take me home, please.”

She nods.

Samuel rushes us. “You aren’t taking her anywhere. Ever again.” He pulls me from Lianne, and she lowers her head, looking at the dirt floor.

Stepping away from me, she allows him to guide me away from the crowd. People kneel at Luke’s side.

Is he going to be okay? There is so much blood.

Samuel rounds a tree, pushing my back against it. “Let me see it.” He taps my injured arm.

I can’t believe what he just did.

I turn away from him. “Why did you do that?” I whisper, holding my arm closer to my chest.

“Why did you come out here?” he retorts. “Why did you let him fucking touch you?” He punches the trunk right next to my face, and I flinch.

“I-I just—” I avoid his eyes.

“Look. At. Me,” he hisses through his teeth.

I try, but my eyes can’t look at him.

“I told you to stop being a whore.”

I snapped my eyes at him.

“I told you.”

His tone is threatening.

“I wasn’t being”—I lower my voice—“awhore.”

“Could have fooled me with the way you are looking at him.”

“Fuck you!”

My jaw drops at my words. I have never cussed in front of him—or anyone for that matter.

His nostrils flare, and he presses his chest against mine. “Is that what you want?”

What is he talking about?

“What?” I squint. “What does that even mean?”

“Nothing. Get in the car.” He steps back. “Or do I have to do it myself?”

I scan his face, but his stony expression doesn’t falter, so I walk past him and follow the trail to the opening Lianne and I came from.

His black BMW is parked right next to Lianne’s Audi.

He pushes past me and opens the passenger door for me.

I look at him before getting in.

He takes a deep breath. “Get in, Eden. Don’t make this worse.”
