Chapter 51
Trevor
"Okay, so, how are we going to do this?" Kai sounds confused, and I don't blame him. The stress of moving tomorrow while also planning a surprise party in our new backyard on the same day isn't logical. Except it is. Which is confusing as fuck.
Nina's birthday is in a few days, but once we're in our house, the odds of Nina making it to her birthday without having her mental breakdown are slim. So Ridge and Henry came up with the idea of dropping our boxes in the door, then surprising Nina in the garden with her parents and Adam for a cute pastry/coffee birthday celebration.
The weather has been cooling a bit, so it won't be too awful. Plus, we'll be getting there around nine in the morning, which adds to the incentive to do it right away just in case the day heats up.
I can't believe summer is over. Halloween is just around the corner too. Utah won't get too cold before December so maybe we can do something cool outside for Halloween.
"We already had Will and Meg tell her they wouldn't be over until noon, so she won't be expecting them anyway," Henry explains, jotting down a list of things to pick up for said party.
Ridge scratches his head. "Why don't we just ask her to have a coffee with us out in the garden before we start unpacking? Honestly, it's simple, and she'd love the thoughtfulness of it."
"But are we sure having a party literally as we are moving in is the right call?" I ask, worried this might be too much for our girl.
Henry stops writing and looks up at me with concern. "You think? It's not really a party though. I thought a yummy breakfast with her favorite latte would be relaxing for her. Plus, she wouldn't hate the invite list."
Okay, so maybe it's not too much. "I'm still worried," I admit, imagining all the shit that could go wrong.
"We all know how stressful moving is," Kai thinks out loud, "so maybe this would be a good time for her to pause a bit. Create a great first memory at the new house."
Well, when he puts it like that. "Fair point."
"If she hates it, we go back inside and start unpacking." Ridge sounds confident in the backup plan, but that adds a whole new concern.
"But Nina has shown how great she is at hiding her negative feelings. She's not sleeping, and yet she's still as active as ever. Only when we aren't looking does she hang her head. Who's to say she wouldn't just go along with the party even if she doesn't want to?"
"Then we need to be more observant," Henry answers with a shrug. "We know Nina and her tells. If we can't trust her to take care of herself, then we need to trust ourselves to do it for her."
Sounds like the perfect morning to me. I'll happily watch my girl and swoop in to take care of her. "I can do that."
The agreement is mutual around the circle, so with that squared away, the four of us go back to getting shit ready for move in day tomorrow. I still can't believe we're throwing a surprise birthday party.
I just hope she likes it.
Stepping into the entryway of our beautiful new home with Nina clutching the keys is absolutely surreal. We're here. We're really fucking here. I'm beyond ready to move forward and figure out who we are as a family.
We grew up together, fought through hell together—and apart—but now we're on our way to a futuretogetherin all the best of ways. No more stalkers or serial killers next door or hunting Nina down.
So many possibilities lie before us. And I'm not just talking about the blank white walls and clean hardwood floors. I'm talking about dreams, goals...aspirations.
Kai wraps an arm around Nina's waist and smiles down at her. "Flora, want to have our coffees out in the garden before we start unpacking?"
Just as Ridge predicted, Nina lights up at the invite. "Oh! That sounds amazing. What a sweet idea."
Damn, she's adorable.
I can't help myself; I step up behind her and kiss the silky spot beneath her ear. "Let's go then, baby."
My dick swells in my shorts when she shivers and arches in response. Her ass sways in her green dress ahead of me as we make our way to the back door. I step around them so I can walkahead—I need to control myself before the in-laws see my boner.Christ, she's a walking temptation.
Chattering away, Nina points out different spots where she wants to put things as Kai guides her. I see theHappy21st Birthdaybanner swinging from a few tree branches when I make it to the sliding glass door.
Just as Nina approaches me, she takes a sip, which is why when we step out onto the back patio and we all screamsurprise, I believe she chokes a little. But I'm soon stabbed in the fucking heart when a soul shattering sob explodes from her lungs and tears begin pouring down her pale cheeks.
We don't allow her to hit the ground when her knees buckle. I think she's finally breaking and wehaveto let it happen.
I just wish it didn't hurt so fucking much to watch the love of my life shattering with the realization that she's survived another on Earth against all odds.
Nina is a goddamn survivor. A warrior. Even the strongest of people need to break, but their willpower and resiliency never allows them to be beyond repair.
