Davi only patted his head, shushing him like a mother would a child. “I won’t tell him, miho. But the doctor said to take a test, yes?”

“Yeah.”

Davi glanced at his watch, frowning as he realised the time. “Come inside. I will go to the store. We have half an hour until they get back. It is enough time. Then you will decide what to tell Luca.”

Oliver let out a long breath and wiped his eyes. “Okay. Okay. I… I’m sorry, Davi. For drawing you into this.”

Davi let out a soft chuckle as he guided Oliver back down the garden path. “You are my filho. My Luca’s chosen. It is my job.”

“Here,”Davi said, handing him the pink box. “It’s easier if you piss in a pot and dip the test in the piss.”

Oliver felt strange as Davi handed him the pregnancy test, like it should have been happening to someone else. “A-Are you sure? Won’t it contaminate the result?”

Davi only smiled as he gently ushered him through the bathroom door. “I have done enough of them to know. And I… I did something whilst I waited at the pharmacy, Ollie. I hope you don’t mind. And I hope Luca won’t kill me if you decide to tell him.” Oliver’s eyes widened as he thought for one sickening moment that Davi had told Lucas about the phone call. “Ah, sorry Filho. I only meant?—”

Davi handed Oliver his mobile phone. The screen was open on what appeared to be a text conversation written in Portuguese. Davi flicked to the next screen, which brought up the conversation in English.

“I translated it to English whilst I waited in line, so maybe some words are not right. But… I want you to read it whilst you wait. So you are reminded of what you mean to my son.” Davi’s eyes were wide and glassy as he cupped Oliver’s cheek. “Oliver, you…” the words trailed off.

“Y-Yes?”

“Whatever the result, I want to say thank you.”

Oliver swallowed. “For what?”

“For bringing my son back.” Oliver’s throat went dry as he placed the phone on the windowsill and opened the box. “I will leave you now. But I will only be in the next room.”

Letting out a shaky breath, he said, “Thank you.”

As he’d zipped up his trousers and placed the damp test next to the sink, he picked up the phone and sat on the toilet lid. Hands still trembling, he looked at the phone.

Pai, I met someone today.

Did you? What was their name?

Oliver.

It’s a good name. What is he like?

Grumpy. And funny. And kind.

He sounds like you filho!

Pai, I accidentally kissed Oliver today. What should I do?

Accidentally? Kiss him again, just to be sure! <3

I don’t think he liked it.

Oh :-/ Take him to dinner to say sorry.

Oliver has a cold. Can you send me the recipe for your special tea?

Here you go, baby!
