“Are you finally going to tell us what show we’re seeing?” Ash asked after they had merged onto the freeway. Holly was driving, as usual.
Sofia was distracted by the glances Isaiah kept throwing in her direction in the back seat, but she managed to formulate a response. “I’ll give you a clue. We’ve watched the movie together.”
Ash threw up his hands. “What moviehaven’twe seen together?”
“No fair,” Holly piped up. “You know I haven’t seen a lot of movies. And neither has Isaiah.”
“Another hint?” Ash probed.
“I already gave it to you.”
“What?” Ash asked, confused.
“I already gave you the other hint,” Sofia insisted.
“You’re impossible.”
“I guess you’ll find out when we get there, then,” Sofia said, a mischievous thrill coursing through her. For better or for worse, she and Isaiah were going to give what they’d been feeling a chance that evening.
From the other side of the back seat, Isaiah took her hand, threading her fingers between his. Sofia thought she saw Holly notice it from the rearview mirror.
“All right, let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way before we get to the show,” she announced.
“What elephant?” Holly asked, her voice sweet as ever.
“The one where I respond to the question both of you are too polite to ask. Yes, Isaiah and I are giving things a shot. It was clear that I’m irresistible, and I got tired of saying no.”
Isaiah barked a laugh. Holly covered her grin with a hand.
Ash shook his head. “You always tell it like it is, Sof. Isaiah, anything you want to add? You all right, man? She’s a handful.”
Sofia gently smacked Ash’s arm.
Isaiah laughed. “I like a handful,” he said, turning his eyes to Sofia.
Sofia thought her insides might be melting. As much as she talked big and teased about being irresistible, she still couldn’t understand why Isaiah was so interested in her. He was confident, kind, hilarious… but those were things she’d thought Noah was, too, at least until she discovered what he was really like.
She tried to halt her thoughts, not wanting to let her insecurities about the situation arise. If they were going to give it a shot, she couldn’t let Noah continue to creep into the way she thought about Isaiah.
It’s just a trial run,she reminded herself. You can do this. She flicked her eyes up to Isaiah and found him looking at her.
“Okay, okay. No need to steam up the back windows with your eyes,” Ash said.
Sofia bit her bottom lip playfully before tearing her gaze from Isaiah’s face.It doesn’t help that he’s gorgeous, she thought as she tried to steady the flips in her stomach.
They found a parking spot in the busy little city by sheer luck again and began the short walk through the downtown streets to the cabaret. Sofia handed her phone to the usher to scan their tickets, and they made their way inside.
A largeClueposter was hanging in the lobby, and some of the other guests were dressed up as Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, and other characters from the board game and movie.
Ash grinned and turned to her. “We’re seeingClue,” he said, clearly delighted. It was one of their favorites. They rewatched it every October.
“Do you have any idea what this is?” Isaiah faux whispered to Holly.
She smiled and shook her head. “Not a clue.”
“Ha ha.” Sofia grabbed Isaiah’s hand. It felt so natural to fit her hand in his. She tugged him forward. “Come on. Let’s go find our seats.”
“Maybe we needto be more like them to help discover your identity,” Sofia suggested as they walked out of the theater a few hours later. The sky had darkened while they were inside, and the faint light of stars glittered overhead.
