“Technically,” he began effectively shutting her up, “Even if you were there, you wouldn’t have been able to do anything.”

“I’m sorry, who are you?”

“I’m Nathan Cowe,” he sat up in his seat, “Who are you?”

“I’m Olivia.”

He held out his hand and she took it but I didn’t miss the wide eyed look she sent my way. It was somewhere between ‘oh my gosh, I crashed your meeting’ and ‘we have to talk about this later’.

Nathan pulled his hand away first, “I was conducting a session with Adira; and for future purposes you shouldn’t storm into offices. It may have been an important meeting and Adira would have been seen as unprofessional at best and incompetent at worst.”

She opened her mouth, presumably to argue but closed it immediately, “You’re right; that was wrong.”

“No harm, no foul; and that being said, we are practically done here.”

“Right,” Olivia looked just how I feel on a daily basis after interacting with Nathan.

It was so comical, I couldn’t help but snicker. My reaction didn’t go unnoticed by her because she shot me a scathing look.

“You said I wouldn’t have been able to do anything.” She turned back to him and he nodded, “Why would you say that?”

“There were three people throwing eggs at her; two guys and a girl. I’m guessing they are in their late teens or early twenties. If you had touched them, it would have been assault.”

“They were assaulting her.”

“I didn’t say they weren’t. I doubt that you would have been able to take all three of them especially when they had the element of surprise on their hands. They would have either turned their attention on you or they would have run away. Either way, you wouldn’t have been able to beat them.”

She turned to me, “Is he always like this?”

“Welcome to my world,” I answered at the same time he said, “Yes.”

“I should probably leave,” Olivia began but Nathan cut her off.

“You’re already here; you might as well just do what you’re here for.”

He didn’t wait for a response from either of us. He stood up from his chair and started gathering his things from the room. Olivia was shocked by his actions because she sent me worried looks as she sat in the chair he had just vacated.

“Are you okay?” she asked and I nodded,

“I just wanted to check on you myself.”

“You could have called.”

“I did but you didn’t answer.”

I was about to deny her claim but I picked up my phone and realized I had put it on silent so I didn’t hear when her call- or shouldI say calls came in. She left me six missed calls and there were two from my mom. I made a mental note to call her back.

“I’m fine,” I assured her.

“This wouldn’t happen if you just got a bodyguard like everyone has asked.”

“I agree.” We both turned to see Nathan leaning against the doorframe with his hands crossed over his chest.

“I thought you left.” I hardened my voice but he either didn’t notice or didn’t care.

He faced Olivia as he spoke, “If she had a bodyguard; that probably wouldn’t have happened or would have been handled smoother.”

“I’m sorry but why are you still-,”
