I stepped out of the door and was met with screaming people. It took me a second to orient myself when I felt something hit me on the arm. I felt something wet slide down my arm and looked down to see a runny egg. Another one hit me in the chest before I could say anything.
“What the hell?” I had forgotten Nathan was behind me.
“Wait a minute then go to the car.” I pushed him back into the café as the eggs started coming at me quicker.
I hurried away from the front door of the café and onto the sidewalk because I can imagine the last thing she would want to do is clean up the mess that a bunch of eggs would make.
“Where the fuck are you going?” Nathan asked although it was difficult to hear him over the noise people were making.
“Just go to the fucking car.” I screamed back.
Getting away wasn’t an easy feat because they kept following me with screams and more eggs. It took me almost three minutes to realize what they were chanting- ‘whore’. I thought that chapter was closed and behind us.
I walked in the opposite direction first before crossing the street and making my way to the car. I assume they ran out of eggs because they stopped pelting me, but they still followed me while yelling obscenities.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and was about to scream out of frustration when I realized it was Nathan. I felt my shoulders deflate in relief as he guided me to the car. He stood close to the screaming fans and guided me so I was on the safe side and out of their sight.
I tried my best to block them out and mentally detach from my surroundings. It was working too well because I almost didn’t notice a woman block my way. She looked my age or slightly older and she was wearing ripped jeans and a plain white shirt.
I ignored her and tried to side step but she blocked my way. I grabbed her shoulders and shoved her to the side.
“Get the fuck out of my way,” I spat.
She stumbled over her own feet and fell on her ass. “Did you see that?” she screamed, “She pushed me!”
I didn’t have the energy or time to stand and explain to her the difference between a push and moving someone out of your way so I ignored her cries of attention and walked over to my car.
“Give me the keys.”
I narrowed my eyes at Nathan, “It’s my car.”
“Now is not the time to argue.”
I realized he was right so I huffed, dug through my pocket for the keys and tossed it to him. He caught it with one hand and got into the driver’s side. I cringed at the thought of having to sit in my car with raw eggs all over my body but did it anyways. Getting away from here in one piece is worth the rigorous cleaning this car will have to go through.
The car ride back to the office was the same as the one out of it. We were both quiet. As soon as he pulled into the parking lot, I tried to get out only for Nathan to lock it back.
“I want to get out Nathan. Having eggs on you is not a comfortable thing.”
“Do you have anything to change into?”
“Of course not,” I snapped, “How am I to know that something would happen to make me need a new pair of clothes. Do I look like I plan for these things to happen?”
“Is there a bathroom where you can change?”
“Yes, on the top floor.” I was growing impatient, “Now can I get out?”
“Wait for me there.” I didn’t respond because he opened the door after that and I hightailed out of the car.
I heard the gasps from the employees as I walked into the office. The office went deathly quiet and within a minute it was ablaze with whispers. I ignored them and made my way to Marissa’s office.
She lifted her head from her laptop as I pushed open the door to her office and her eyes widened when she took in my appearance.
“Can you go to any store around and get me a plain shirt?” I asked and she nodded.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go home?”
“I have shit to do,” I responded hotly, “I’d be damned if I let something as insignificant as a few eggs derail that.”
