“Great,” complained Mari. “You guys will be done before I get halfway.”

I grinned at her. “Maybe you should try wadin’ in the lake.” She’d been damned impressive during the obstacle training.

Her eyes lit up. “I wonder if he’d let me?” She stomped off to ask him, and I peeled off my shirt.

Just as well she was gone. There were some things I’d rather she not witness. And havin’ me shift form with a perpetual stiffy was on the list.

Anna

Cara led us back to the clearing.

Trix sniffed around as we sat down on the grass. Matt was predominant in my mind.

“Can you teach me how tonotuse this power?” I asked.

Cara’s eyes twinkled, and I had the uncomfortable feeling that she knew exactly what I was up to.

“It may take some time for you to achieve the kind of control you are seeking,” she said.

Okay. That was so not the news I wanted to hear. There might be lots of flogging in both Matt’s and my future. If women flogged. It sounded more like a male thing, somehow.

I might have to make inquiries.

I sighed, and thought it was time for a confession to highlight the issue. So I told her about me and Matt.

Her face remained calm and stoic throughout, but I thought I detected a hint of alarm in her energy.

I didn’t blame her. I was more than alarmed, myself.

“Are you certain his heart stopped beating?” she asked.

“Not completely, but damned close to it. I think I fed some energy back to him, and that’s what ultimately saved him.”

The Watcher’s lips compressed. “Need I suggest for you to not engage in any more such activity until we have you trained?”

My heart sank.

“Anna. I know this is hard...”

“That’s what Matt says.” I managed to laugh.

She smiled. “He’ll push—it’s in his nature. But you must resist, or it might happen again.”

How dare anyone or anything come between me and Matt? The thought surged through me, and in that instant, I was consumed with rage.

It came at me out of nowhere, and I saw Cara’s eyes widen. I battled it back where it belonged—deep inside, where no one should ever dwell.

“Wow.” Cara rubbed her hands on her thighs. “Do you often have those outbursts?”

I was about to say no, but then I remembered that rage had already led me to kill three people. I wasn’t counting the one I’d pegged with a knife. That seemed different, somehow.

Although he was just as dead.

“Only when I’m lethal,” I admitted. “It comes out of nowhere, and then—boom. Not with Matt, though. That was different.”

Cara tilted her head. “Let’s examine that, then, shall we? It will help me to guide you.”
