Dani’s fingers gripped her knees, and they had turned bone-white. Every time she thought she was free, it was all proved to be a sham. But everything she touched turned to dust, and Tyrez’s entire life had been destroyed. The least she could do, was go along with what he needed.
But they wanted her to be bait for Rindek. She never wanted to see that bastard again. What if it all went wrong?
She’d rather die, than end up back in the Archmage’s hands.
“Whens iss Taran planning for?” Tyrez sat his Dragon butt down on the grass.
“As soon as she’s able, he wants her in place. He’s chosen the forest where Rindek had the Dire packs stashed. Figures the Seer will spot her and lead them there.”
Dani swallowed. If what she’d seen in the dreams was true, Ash wasn’t in any kind of shape to lead Rindek anywhere.
“The Archmage saws thats Dani was comings tos the fortress. Rindeks must haves a new Sseer,” Tyrez rumbled. “No ways Ash wass wells enoughs to leads him to the fortress.”
It dovetailed so closely with Dani’s thoughts that she stared at Tyrez. Had Rindek replaced Ash with another Seer?
“New Seer? What new Seer?” Razir examined his brother. “How do you know the Oracle is in bad shape?”
Tyrez cleared his throat and answered his brother. “I ssaw him. Ins a dream.”
Razir’s mouth opened and closed. “In a dream?”
“Its wass a living dream. I ams quites certain.”
Dani’s mouth dropped open. A living dream? Like what she’d experienced with Remy? Her heart twisted. She hadn’t expected proof that what she’d experienced was real. It threw everything she believed into question. If it was a living dream, the energy between the three of them might be real too.
No. Tyrez and Ash belonged together. She was just a third wheel, pulled into this only because Tyrez had bitten her—to save her life.
How could she have ever thought the big Dragon would do such a thing to gain control over her? No matter what he asked, she’d do it. She owed him.
Razir seemed speechless. He stared at Tyrez, and she read the anxiety in his gaze, as though he worried his brother had lost his mind.
Tyrez ignored the look. “Ifs the Sseer tells the Archmage abouts Dani, what’s sstopping him froms sseeing the Dragons trap as well?”
Razir looked uncomfortable. “Taran will hide the Dragons a day before she goes through. But if the Archmage figures it out...” Razir shrugged. “Then your Dire gets a free pass.”
Tyrez’s gaze narrowed. “Tells Taran sshe needss more time. Hass he gots a report backs yet on the deads Dragons?”
Dani frowned in confusion. “What dead Dragons?”
Tyrez glanced to her. “The areas arounds the fortress was littered withs bodies ofs Dragons. Something killed thems. We needs to knows what.”
A knot formed in Dani’s gut. What could possible kill a Dragon?
Razir looked uncomfortable. “He hasn’t done anything about them.”
Tyrez straightened. “Doesn’t he wants to know hows Rindek killed off every Dragon ins that place?”
Razir shrugged. “They were only rogues. Barely had enough power to shift to Dragon at all. He said they were weak. Easy prey.”
Dani saw the spikes along Tyrez’s spine stand on end. “There wass barely a marks on thosse Dragons. Ifs Taran iss going ups against the Archmage, hes needss to knows what killed them.”
Razir swayed from foot to foot. “I’ll try again. But he isn’t likely to listen.”
Tyrez hissed, very low and Razir straightened. “I will tell him Dani isn’t ready yet,” he said. “Take care of yourself, brother.”
Tyrez said nothing as the purple Dragon shifter disappeared down the path. He spoke without looking at Dani.
“I woulds buys yous more time if I could.”
