Realization, and with it came horror. Zach hadn’t been dreaming of himself as a Sabre. He’d been inside Kade, all along. And this was no dream.
No.Confused and panicked, Zach yanked away. He sensed them reach for him...
He bolted upright. Found himself standing beside the bed, Spike staring at him in astonishment. His heart pounded, and his body was covered in sweat. Sweat, and evidence that at least parts of the dream had been very real.
Zach closed his eyes and collapsed on the bed. Rubbed his face, hard. Was he wrong? Had it been just a vivid dream?
No. It had been too real. And Kade’s voice had been too damned clear. He’d been linked with them. While they’d made love.
He wanted Jessie. Longed for her with a strength that hooked into his soul. But this thing with Kade...
Triads were for Sabres. Even if Zach accepted becoming a Sabre, and transformed successfully, could he tolerate Kade as a partner? His gut twisted. He and Jessie weren’t going to happen, and that was just reality. He needed to get over this and get on with his life.
He’d boarded up the downstairs windows, but part of the bedroom one remained open to let in the breeze. With a chirrup, Buffy appeared.
“You missed all the excitement,” Zach pointed out as he opened the room door and headed for the bathroom. Spike followed him, and the cat followed the dog.
First, a shower. Then he’d make the trip to the glade. Nothing could penetrate the shielding Cara had put in place.
Not even Jessie.
* * *
Jessie pulled her car into the garage and squeezed out the door.
Kade. Your damned motorcycle is moved over too far. I barely got in.
Sorry, babe. I’ll move it later. Making pizza.
Did we have enough ground beef?
Not quite. Added some sausage.
At one point in the not-so-distant past that might have revolted her. Since becoming a Were, her appetite for meat of any kind had skyrocketed. So all she added wasyum.
Kade moving into her tiny house had caused no end of issues. Fortunately, other than her car, Jessie wasn’t a material-things-kinda gal.
Kade, it turned out, was. In addition to his truck, he had the Harley, which currently took up space in her garage. And a seemingly endless selection of things that, as he put it, he needed to do his job. Although what a pinball machine had to do with chasing down rogue Dires, she’d no idea.
Stress relief,he said.
Hey. What did I say about snooping without permission?
Sorry, the pinball thing slipped through.
They were still learning about each other. Much to her surprise, Kade had a split persona. His mundane, official job meant he spent most of his time investigating insurance fraud and wayward husbands. The police knew him as a profiler. Only the Cryptid world knew him as an enforcer of council rules.
Having someone in her head was taking a lot of adjustment. To Kade, it seemed like second nature. But then, he’d had practice with his previous mates.
Mates. Plural. She sighed.
Zach’s made it pretty clear he wants to be left alone, babe.
How can he still want that, after he shared in our dream? It has to be real, Kade. What other explanation do you have?
I have none,he admitted. It shouldn’t be possible for a non-Sabre to do that. But it appears he is going to require some convincing. Although, I would have thought epic sex should have been sufficient.
Epic sex usually solves many male issues.Jessie’s lips twitched.Zach still thinks it’s his ability that’s responsible, not a bond. Maybe Cara can find something in those books that proves we are right.
