1049 - Saddle Abbey, Scotland

Kieran asked, “TheseUna and Eilidh lasses locked you in the cellars when you were a bairn and Sister Ines helped them?”

“Yes. She was their aunt, and I was often mistreated. But Abbess Murdina recruited me to join theOrderand my life changed.”

“I see, and that’s why you’re so well trained. I mean, you saved my life, and that assassin was vicious.”

“Being with me is dangerous, Kieran. I do not want you to get hurt again. So, I’ve been thinking. For your safety, tis best if some months of the year, I live here in the abbey and you—”

“No, we are married. Wherever you go, I go. Tis my job to guard you and that’s final.”

Naomi was sitting on Kieran’s lap on a bench in the abbey’s private courtyard. She had one final task to carry out for theOrderbefore they returned to Henderson land.

Naomi yelped when Kieran lifted her off his lap, then he went storming down the cloister.

“Where is that hateful Sister Ines?” he said loudly.

“Kieran, stop it this instant. She’s already dead.”

He turned and looked over at the line of crosses in the cemetery garden. “Is she over there?” he demanded as he moved towards the tombstones.

Naomi was up and running after him. “Kieran, what are you doing?”

“I’m going to dig up her bloody bones and throw her onto un-consecrated ground.”

Naomi just rolled her eyes and latched onto him. “You will do no such thing. There will be no desecrating of graves while you’re here. Abbess Murdina is still angry you killed her roses, even if it was an accident.”

“Well then, I’m going to spit on her grave instead.”

“You will not do that either. Good grief, what is the matter with you? Is this how you’re going to behave when our babe arrives? What type of example are you going to set for our child?”
