Chapter 10
Elcho Nunnery, Perthshire
“Idinnae like the lookof this place,” Kieran said.
“Neither do I,” Dermid replied.
It had been two days before they finally entered the outer grounds ofElcho Nunnery, and now they were staring up at a large stone structure nestled within overgrown foliage. They had stayed the night in an inn on the south bank of theTay, but Kieran did not like the strange looks he was receiving from the locals, so they pressed on to make it to the nunnery before noon.
Naomi had to agree. It seemed dark and foreboding. It was nothing like Saddell Abbey, which had a sense of bustling activity. This place looked like a neglected graveyard and had the feel of death about it. Naomi just shuddered inwardly.
“Why does it look deserted? And why is it so quiet here?” Dermid asked.
“Because they’re a Cistercian order,” Naomi replied.
“What does that mean?” Kieran asked.
“They prefer silence, fasting and solitude and sometimes separation even from each other. But they do not want to be completely isolated. So, they build something like this deep in the woods, yet still close to the castle and the local village.”
Dermid said, “I would go daft if I could not eat and then had to remain silent.”
“I believe you,” Naomi replied.
“Tell me again why we are skulking about at the side entrance?” Kieran asked.
“I do not want to make my presence known just yet,” Naomi replied.
“Aye, that is wise. I dinnae think you should go alone. There may be dangers in there.”
Naomi whipped her head around and said, “Kieran, I am perfectly safe, I can assure you.”
Kieran raised his brow. “Really? This from a woman who was set upon by club wielding monks. No, I am to guard you wherever you go and that is exactly what I’m going to do.”
“Kieran, please, you and Dermid have done enough, and I thank you, but you should continue on without me.”
“And who will see you to Dunsinane?”
“I am sure a lay man can assist me.”
