Page 91 of His Curse
I already figured my mate didn’t tell anyone else about his curse, but apparently he didn’t really tell anyone anything about what happened last year, either.
“Uhm… “ I’m not really sure how to go about all of this.
Thankfully, I don’t have to figure it out, because Cora leans, pulls her phone from her pocket and flaps a hand at me. “I’m calling my brother and putting him on speaker. The silver is a dead giveaway, but I think we’re going to need him to weigh in on this since demons are his area of expertise.”
“Good plan, angel,” Vok says with a smile.
We sit in silence while Cora’s phone rings, my very unconscious mate scowling in his sleep as I adjust the pillow in my lap he’s currently resting on.
I don’t know what normally happens after a shift tothe other, but this time it seems to have knocked Colton the fuck out and maybe that’s for the best right now. He’s sore, I can feel that much, but other than that he’s at ease, so I’m just gonna ride this out before the shit hits the fan later.
“My gem!” Zan chirps over the speaker. “And what can I do for you this—”
“We need to talk.”
“Cora? What is wrong? Do we need to return? Are you ok? What is going on?”
She sighs. “We have questions for you, brother dear, and I want the truth since you obviously left a few things out when I got the story about saving yours and Frankie’s souls.”
Zan goes completely silent for a few beats before he sighs. “Ask away, my gem. I promise I shall speak nothing but the truth.”
Vok snorts and rolls his eyes, earning him a scowl from his mate before she starts what no doubt is going to be a very interesting story time. “You knew about Colt, didn’t you?”
“Uhm… I need you to be a little more specific, my gem. I know a great many things about the wolf ,and I feel as though there is one in particular you’re looking for.”
“His other wolf, Zan. Don’t be cute. I want you to tell me everything from the second Vok and I walked out of the clan cave to when you waltzed back into the mansion with Frankie alive and well.”
He blows out a breath. “I knew of his curse, yes. I suspected the wolf had been touched by evil a while before my darling girl succumbed to her terrible, though brief, end. He would not discuss it despite my many attempts at doing so, but I saw the telltale signs, and the night I fought Thologar, it was confirmed.”
“How?” I blurt because honestly, I’m really fucking curious. I have a little theory I’ve been kicking around sincethe otherobeyed my commands, and I think maybe our demon will be able to confirm that too.
“Lark? My delicious little Luna, how good to hear your voice. My mate and I have missed you so these past few days. Is the wolf with you? Put him on.”
“Focus, Zan,” Cora snaps. “And that’s why we’re calling. Colt is passed the fuck out on the couch right now because we just had a little visit from—what did you call it?The other?”
“Is everyone alright? We shall return at once.” Shifting of fabric and all kinds of other noise comes through the phone, and when there’s an obvious thump that causes Zan to cuss a blue streak, I decide to speak up.
“Everyone is fine, Zan. Colton is asleep, he has been for about an hour now, but we have some questions that only you can answer.”
“The twins? The three of you? Everyone is ok?”
“Yes.” I sigh. “Everyone is ok, honey. We just need some answers.”
He blows out another breath. “Yes, well, I shall do my best to shed some light on the matter then.” A crack of a lighter meets our ears and I grin as Cora rolls her eyes and mouthsthey are such stoners. “Like I said, I suspected Colt had been touched by evil at some point, a very old, very powerful evil from that of an ancient demon much like the bastard who sired me. When I summoned Thologar to the clan cave and used all of my power to do so, it drew the attention of a few rather…prominentfigures in our culture.”
“Zan… “ Cora glares at her phone.
Ah, sibling rivalry at its best. Makes me glad I’m an only child.
“What I may have failed to mention was that prior to whisking me away to the Desolate Plane, The Maker and The Destroyer may or may not have made a visit to the clan’s cave first.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Vok shakes his head and closes his eyes while he pinches the bridge of his nose. “And you thought leaving something like that out was a good idea?”
“I didn’t think it to be a bad one, but not particularly a good one either.”
I lean forward a bit as Cora looks as though she’s about ready to lose her shit. “Is that when you got confirmation about Colton?”
“Yes, my delicious Luna, it is. Between myself, Thologar, and The Destroyer himself, I believe there was so much concentrated evil in that cave that it forced our wolf to shift tothe otherinstead of his most fantastic and true one.”
