Colton nudges our back leg, my wolf stopping immediately and looking over her shoulder at our mate. “Let me go first. We give him the equivalent of an eye roll but he chuffs at us.You’re too focused on the two. There are at least three other guards up there running this way.”

“So? I’m a big girl, Alpha. I don’t need—”

With a nip to my flank, the beautiful reddish-brown wolf starts pushing me out of the way. “Did your wolf learn how to open doors, or were you planning on jumping through that window?”

My mate nods toward the door and I follow only to see he means the short narrow slat that our snout wouldn’t even fit through. “You have a better idea,Alpha?”

Which apparently he does, because Colton pushes us completely out of the way, listens next to the heavy wooden door and once neither of us hear anymore footsteps, he rears back and plows through it like it was made of paper mache.

“Real smooth.” I snort. “Way to keep us under the radar.”

But my mate ignores me in favor of doing a quick sweep of our surroundings before deferring back to me. “Which way?”

We go back to following the scent, Dick’s nasty odor so much stronger than the doc’s, and just like I thought, it leads right to Kentworth’s office. Which is when my anger kicks into overdrive and starts making decisions for both my wolf and I.

Without thinking, we back up then rush forward, shouldering the door as hard as we can. Neither of us hear our mate’s words, hear our alpha’s warning or commands. We hear nothing at all except the sound of our body crashing into the wood until it starts to splinter and crack, until it finally bends to our will and gives way.

Andthatwas our biggest mistake.

The second we’re inside the large office, we spin on the two bodies looming behind the door but our need for vengeance has clouded our judgment because that’s when Dick fires two rounds directly at us, our body crashing to the ground with a thud.

“Welcome home, bitch.” Dick starts to laugh as whatever he just shot me with forces my wolf to shift back and my human form rolls to the side. “Knew it’d only be a matter of—oh my god, what the fuck is that?”

Colton charges in behind me, quickly pushing my body up against a chair before coming to stand in front of me. It doesn’t feel like the bullets I’ve been hit with before, not the poison I’m used to. It actually feels more like a combination of whatever Kentworth uses to force a shift and morphine, but I can’t say for sure. I just know that I hurt, and I’m suddenly so tired that I feel like I’m sinking in quicksand.

“Holy shit.” Dick blinks wide eyes as he takes in the magnificent viciousness of my mate. “Doc, Doc are you seeing this?”

Kentworth slowly comes forward, still protected by his psychotic head of security, his old wrinkly face just as surprised. “My god…Zitkala,is this… did you bring me your chosen breeding partner?”

Uhm, what the actual fuck?

Is this guythatdelusional that he truly believes I left to find a wolf to breed with beforereturningto the facility to willingly join the program?

There’s no way.

There is absolutely no way someone as intelligent as this asshole could really believe that’s what I’m doing, that I’m here for that reason.

“He’s lovely.” The doc continues forward but the second Colton lets out a warning growl and snaps his teeth, Dick’s arm shoots out in front of him and stops the mad man in his tracks.

“No disrespect, Doctor, but are you fucking nuts?”

My head lolls to the sidebefore I try to push myself up a bit more. If I didn’t want to kill him so badly, I’d actually agree with the homicidal maniac because clearly Kentword has lost his goddamn mind.

Especially when he shakes his head and actually tries to walk past his guard. “I’ve never seen a wolf this big before. Never in all my years of research.”

“Which is exactly why we need to be moving in the opposite direction.”

I watch Dick try to pull Kentworth away, trying to get him to the door, but Colton growls deep in his throat and turns so he’s still between me and the men, but is now blocking the only clear exit with his humungous head.

“He’s perfect,Zitkala.” The doc keeps up his delusion. “Is he—”

“You… you are just-just as goddamn crazy… as the rest of the bastards you have… working here.” My chest pumps hard as I force the words out, my gaze barely meeting his confused one. What the fuck are in those bullets?“I… we came back here to… to kill you, Doc. So I guess… guess I’m out of the program, huh?”

“Zitkala,I don’t understand?”

I manage to chuckle a bit as I finally get mostly upright. “For some sort of genius, you really are… stupid.”

“I thought you liked it here? You were like a daughter to me, I cared for—”
