Page 87 of Surviving Midnight

When Theo told me she was going to marry me one day, fucking midnight.

Every significant and meaningful moment we’ve shared has happened at midnight and not only is that crazy because the most pivotal moments of my life before her—the death of my parents and when I was found—also happened at midnight, it was subconscious on my end while Theo clearly took note of it.

Midnight has been my witching hour for so long that I didn’t fully comprehend the way my angel turned it around.

And that’s exactly why I shift Theo in my lap and dig around in my pocket, pull out the small velvet box and propose to my girl in the middle of a shit storm.

“Marry me, honey.”

She blinks away instant tears as she opens the box with trembling hands. “Zak...” Theo whispers.

“This isn’t the way I wanted to ask, in a fucking boxcar with a bullet in my arm after I saved you from the shit I caused in the first place, but I’m asking anyway. Forgive me. Marry me, be my wife. Be mine forever.”

“Yes!” she shouts in my face. “Yes to everything except forgiveness because there is nothing to forgive. I will abso-fucking-lutely be your wife because I fucking love you.”

I slide the chocolate diamond onto her finger, throw the box over my shoulder and kiss her fucking brutal, but once again her tits squeak and I pull back with a frown. “What the fuck is in your shirt?”

Theo giggles through her tears as she stuffs an arm down her sweater andholy shit.

“Is that... is that a—“

“Zak Wyatt, I’d like for you to meet your Christmas present, George 2.0.”

My heart fucking soars as I stare at my fiancé, eye moving between her gorgeous face and the adorable bulldog puppy in her hand.

Jesus, I feel like I could cry.

“George, this is your daddy.”

Oh fuck.

Iamgoing to cry.

“George, huh?” I clear my throat a million times and lift a shaking hand. I scratch behind his ears, his fur soft and puppy-like over his trembling body. “Solid name.”

Theo smiles and leans her head on my chest. “That’s just what I’ve been calling him in my head. You can name him whatever you want.”

“George 2.0 works.” My throat is so fucking tight. “Thank you, honey.”

“No need, big guy. You don’t have to thank someone for loving you. Just accept that they do and that’s enough.”

“I love you, Theo.”

“I love you too, Zak. So damn much.”

I sigh into her hair and hold my girl close. I always thought things that happened at midnight were doomed, things to be survived because they were the darkest and most terrible things to happen, but I was wrong.

I guess midnight isn’t such a bad time after all.

EPILOGUE

ZAK

Five years later

“Oh. My. God. Yes. Yes, Zak!”Theo buries her face in the tangled sheets and starts chanting my name into the mattress. “Zak. Yes. Zak!”

I slap her ass as I pound into her from behind, my fingers digging into her hip. “You gonna call me old again?”
