Page 42 of His Fate
She nods slowly and motions for me to continue.
"Posey… Josephine, I..." Gods this is much harder than I anticipated. "My beloved Josephine, my name is not Kasimir Dragovihk. I am Kasimir the Chosen of the Dragovihk Clan. I am not thirty-seven-years old as I told you, but am three hundred and thirty seven years old. I am king, not just of my clan but of all of my kind. I am king of all… dragon shifters and you, my beautiful Posey, are my fated mate."
Her expression doesn't change.
Her eyes stay wide.
She is silent.
Then, after a few agonizing breaths, Posey bursts into laughter.
But when I do not join her she stops. "Oh my god, you're serious."
I simply nod.
"You really think you're a dragon? King of dragon shifters?"
I nod again.
"Of course you do." She sighs on a nervous laugh then raises a hand to her forehead. "It makes total sense. Of course you believe something like that."
I frown.
This is not acceptance, this is disbelief.
"I should have known. You are just too perfect. You're too smart, too fucking hot, too thoughtful. Of course there had to be something wrong with you." Posey gets to her feet and starts to pace. "It was just too perfect." Then her eyes snap to mine and I smell fear in her once again. "You brought me out here to kill me, didn't you? Oh my god, how could I be so stupid?"
I watch as she starts backing toward the door and immediately get to my feet. "No. Posey, please. Just listen, I am telling the truth."
She shakes her head and holds her hands out to keep me away. "No. No, you're just trying to catch me off guard, waiting for me to consider what you said long enough to get your hands on me."
"My beloved, just come sit down, let us talk about this. I'm being truthful. I have no intention of hurting you, ever. I love you. Posey, you are my one true mate. I love you and would sooner die myself than let harm come to you."
Her eyes narrow despite the tears. "No," she says firmly. "No, you don't get to say that, not when you're spouting off all this crazy bullshit."
"Where are you going? Posey, please."
Then she's gone.
Posey throws open the front door and starts running. Down the steps and into the yard, past my truck toward the road and after a second, I chase after her.
"Posey, wait!"
"No, Kai. I will not just wait for you to kill me!"
"I would never, will never let harm befall you. I love you! Please, I am telling you the truth!"
She whips around and gives me a pointed glare. "Prove it," Posey bites out. "If you're telling me the truth, if you really are a dragon whatever and you really love me, then prove it."
I just stare at her and when she nods, resignation settling on her features, the frantic need and intense fear overwhelms me.
So, I do the only thing I can to prove I am telling her the truth. I do the one thing I have never done, never considered doing for anyone. I have to reveal my secret, my beast, in order to keep my beloved.
I have to do the only thing I can in order to make that happen.
I shift.
