Page 110 of His Fate
That is the brother we came to love all those years ago and I could not be more grateful for his return than I am in this second.
Silence falls over us once again while I hold my Josephine close, breathe in her scent before it is gone completely.
Then Andrej nods, takes a step back but not without shooting Havok a look.
"I will keep watch until the sun is set to rise, make sure they are protected from anyone who thinks it wise to come back and I will make sure the king returns with his mate before I am no longer able to aid him if need be."
And with that, everyone slowly, somberly returns to the mansion where they will no doubt each mourn in their own ways as well.
Once alone, Havok crouches before me, examining my face with those glowing eyes. "I shall keep watch from a distance, give you the time you need, the time I wish I had had but I will keep my word to our brother. When the sun begins to rise I will make sure you both return to them before I can no longer do so."
I nod, burying my nose in my beloved's hair but just before Havok gets to his feet I look up and meet his gaze. "Thank you."
He regards me only briefly before he gives a curt nod and heads into the forest.
And I am left totally alone with the love of my life lying limp in my arms.
Rain pours down on us, pelts our bodies with its cold tears.
I have no idea how long we sit like that but eventually my body grows so tired, so bone deep exhausted that I lay us down, curl myself around my mate and try to burn the feeling of her pressed against me into my mind until I drift to sleep.
* * *
I wakewith a start as thunder booms in the distance, my body shivering like mad, shaking right down to my marrow.
Then I panic because I'm alone, completely alone, my mate nowhere to be found.
I sit up and search around me only to find a smoking crater at my side, one still smoldering and black, hot to the touch despite the rain that is coming down in sheets.
She is nowhere.
My beloved Josephine has disappeared and I fear I may truly never find her.
Until a burst of gold flames ignites from the ashes next to me, the explosion so hot it knocks me on my back and temporarily blinds me with its intensity.
And then, oh I must have lost my mind and succumbed to the madness much quicker than I thought, because then I feel hands on my chest, hands I would know anywhere, their touch as familiar as my own.
Those hands travel over my skin, blaze a trail up my neck until they rest on my cheeks, a familiar weight pressing against my body, the scent I never thought I'd experience again filling my nose.
Then lips, lips that taste of candy and my future caress my own and when my eyes finally focus, finally adjust to the pitch black, I feel my heart stop when I find two emerald pools staring back at me.
"You didn't really think you could get rid of me that easy, did you?"
I blink. Do it about fifty more times.
"Sugar? Kai, sugar, say something."
But I just keep staring at her, my beloved Josephine came back to me, my mate in the flesh. The flesh that is now touching almost every inch of my own.
Holy shit.
"Kai? Sugar, please—"
I reach up and palm the back of her head, digging my fingers into her hair and yank her down to me, kissing her hard and with everything I've got to make sure she's really here.
And thank fuck she is.
Posey smiles into the kiss, smiles the way she always does right before she rakes her teeth over my bottom lip and pulls a growl right out of me. "I'm gonna take that as a good sign since you've apparently reverted back to the beginning when you didn't know how to use words at all."
