“They already know,” he replied with a shrug. “And that shit won't happen again.”

“She gonna beat your ass every chance she gets,” Xoey giggled. “I can't wait to see this shit.”

“You’re lowkey off as fuck,” Pyrite replied and shook his head. His hair hung loose around his shoulders, and my hands itched to run my fingers through it.

“It’s high key,” she announced. “But that’s beside the point. Is the food ready?”

“Give me a little bit, and I’ll bring it down,” he said, then his eyes went to me. Even though I hadn’t said a word, he knew I was there, and my nipples hardened under his gaze. “Itty bitty.”

“Pyrite,” I acknowledged him. His left brow rose slightly, and a smile tugged at his lips before the screen went black.

Xoey turned around, rested her knees on the couch, and hung over the side to watch me. “Y’all cute together,” she smiled.

“It’s not that kind of party,” I denied, shaking my head. “That nigga kidnapped me, locked me in a glass cell in his basement, and probably already has plans to kill me once he gets his money.”

“If you say so,” she laughed, then got up from the couch. “See you later, Bestie.”

“You’re going to just leave me here?” I stood in the middle of the cell, confused as fuck. “Seriously?”

“Girl, this is not my story!” Xoey said as she went up the stairs. “But I’ll be around, though!”

“That crazy ass girl ain’t no fucking help,” I said after the door slammed shut. I sat on the bed and then laid down. This shit was not going to end well for me; I just knew it.

PYRITE

“So, you’re cooking?”Xoey asked me as she came outside to stand beside me at the grill. Her face scrunched as she looked at the meat on the grill and then back at me. “How do you know that girl eats meat?”

“Just because you don’t doesn’t mean nobody else does,” I replied, and she rolled her eyes. “And you’ve only been a vegetarian for like a week.”

“I saw a trailer of cows one day, and I swear one of them made eye contact with me,” she dramatically said, and I shook my head. “There was no way I could eat a burger or steak afterward.”

“Did you take your meds that day?” I laughed as I worked. Xoey was always doing something crazy, so her saying she was no longer eating meat and her reason didn’t surprise anyone.

“Yeah,” she answered as she stepped away from me and sat on the steps near the back door. “But I swear to you, Pyrite, it knew it was on its way to be slaughtered.”

“How do you know?” I flipped my steak over and then turned my attention to her.

“It mooed so sad, like it was about to cry,” she answered, and all I could do was stare at her. “I couldn’t handle the sound. Shit was sad.”

“Is that why your daddy now owns twenty cows?” I asked, and she nodded. “I can't wait for you to meet the nigga that’s going to tell you no.”

“Never,” she said, waving me off. “And if he does, then he’s not for me.”

“Or he’s perfect for you,” I countered, and she kissed her teeth. “You spoiled as fuck, Xoey plus twelve, like legit spoiled.”

“Probably, but I make life fun.” She smiled at me and stretched her legs out before her. “Now, tell me your plans for The Baker.”

“The Baker?” I questioned her, and she nodded. “Is that what you’re calling her?”

“Yeah,” she answered with a nod. “Now, stop trying to distract me and tell me your plan.”

“Her pop is going to have to come see me,” I said with a shrug. “I got his son and daughter. Both make him money; he will have to pick which one he wants more.”

Xoey's face twisted like she didn’t believe what I was saying, and then she shook her head. “You have his daughter; I have his son. The son makes more money, but the daughter has a steady income. Which one would you pick?”

“The daughter,” I answered, and she rolled her eyes.

“You’re attracted to the daughter, but we will pretend that isn’t true.”
