"They respond to energy fluctuations. Emotions cause such fluctuations."
"So when they brightened when we..." She trailed off.
"Yes."
"That must make it hard to hide what you're feeling."
I gave her a sidelong glance. "Why do you think Aerie warriors develop such strict control?"
A smile touched her lips. "Makes sense now."
We fell silent again. The bond between us transmitted comfort, curiosity, and beneath it all, the lingering awareness of our kiss.
"Your markings," I said eventually. "They're more stable now."
Claire looked down at her arms where silver lines glowed steadily. "The technique helps. But it's more than that." She hesitated.
"When you're near, they're... calmer."
The admission hung between us. I should have dismissed it, redirected to the task. Instead, I said, "The bond between us affects your energy."
"Bond?"
I'd said too much. "A resonance. Between your markings and my lifelines."
"Is that common?"
"No."
She waited for me to elaborate. When I didn't, she sighed. "You're not big on explanations, are you?"
"Some things defy explanation."
"Try me."
I turned and faced her fully. "The Aerie believe certain energies are naturally complementary. When they meet, they... harmonize."
"And that's happening with us?"
"It appears so."
Claire processed this. "Is that why the council sent you with me? Because our energies match?"
"The council didn't send me. I followed you."
"I know that. But why you specifically?"
I looked away, scanning the compound again. "We should conserve energy. Rest while we can."
"You're avoiding the question."
"Yes."
She laughed softly, the sound unexpected. "At least you're honest about your evasions."
I allowed a small smile. "Rest, Claire. We'll need all our strength tonight."
She settled back against a rock, still watching me. "Fine. But this conversation isn't over."
