I glared up at my teammate at his absurd question. "I'm not hurt that badly." The blood dripping into my eye probably didn't help matters. "Help me up, asshole." Parker laughed and shook his head but he put his hand out and helped me stand.
Now that the adrenaline had worn off and probably whatever Charmaine drugged me with, I was ready for bed.
Speaking of the bitch.
"You destroyed my house!" she hurled at me when I looked at her.
No “thank you” for saving her. No “I'm sorry” for the shit she put me through. Just a whole lot of bitching about how the houselooked. No wonder she was about to be divorced for the second time.
"Did anyone bother to call the cops to bring her in?" I pointed my finger in my ex's direction.
"Yup," Matthew answered. "They should be here shortly.”
"You can't turn me into the cops!" Charmaine screeched. "What will Andrew think about you having me arrested?"
She had a lot of nerve bringing up our son after what she said. "What's he going to think when he finds out you hired someone to kill me?"
After that, she kept her mouth shut and thank God. My head was starting to pound and the last thing I wanted to listen to was her running her mouth.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Sarah
I waited by my phone anxiously waiting for Matthew to call me back. He and the team had left about thirty minutes ago but that thirty minutes felt like thirty hours. That was how slow time was crawling by.
"A watched pot never boils," Black, Graham's boss, said from his position leaning against the wall on the other side of the living room.
Matthew sent him over to stay with me and Andrew while they went to investigate what was taking Graham so long. The longer it took, the more worried I became.
To distract myself I looked more closely at the man who was Graham's boss. He was handsome. Not nearly as ruggedly handsome as Graham but he certainly gave off the silver fox vibes that book lovers were constantly talking about. If someone wrote a book about him, I could see why people would read it.
"Huh?" was all I could manage as a response though because boiling water had nothing to do with our current situation. And I was too worried to actually think straight.
"Well, I guess in this case it would more accurately be a watched clock doesn't pass the time faster."
Ohhhhh. I blushed at the implication. "Patience was never one of my strong suits. Especially not when it comes to those I care about."
I could count on one hand the number of people who made that list. My best friend whose wedding I attended was one, and now Graham and Andrew were the only other two. Knowing that something could be wrong was screwing with my head.
"You're going to have to learn some if you plan to stay with Graham."
"What do you mean?"
I swear I wasn't normally this dense, but it was like I was underwater and my brain was operating at a pace that was much slower than usual.
"Going out on assignments is part of Graham's job. There are times he's going to be away for a couple of days and possibly in danger."
I reeled back like Black had hit me. "Why are you telling me this?"
Black uncrossed his legs and arms and moved toward me across the room like a man stalking his prey. And maybe that was what was happening. Black was the big bad wolf and I was the unsuspecting doe. "Because I need to know you can handle it. Charmaine couldn't and she tore him to pieces when she left. I refuse to let him go through that again. So if you can't handle the type of work he does, then say so now before things get too serious."
He was a little late on his speech because things were already serious between Graham and me. But his words did get me thinking.
Could I handle Graham's job? Could I stay back here and wait for him while he left to risk his life?
I didn't have to think about it long.
"I can handle it," I whispered.
