I always knew there was a chance considering what my father did for a living. It was never a secret and he always made sure I knew how to protect myself and what to watch out for. But never had there been an actual threat.
"Because your mother made some questionable choices recently."
Of course it would be my mother and not my father who put my life in danger. She was as selfish as they came. Her husband, Richard, gave her everything and still she was never happy.
"What kind of choices?"
I didn't really expect my father to tell me. Whereas my mother did nothing but complain about my father, he was the complete opposite. He never had a bad word to say about her, even though she put him through the wringer when it came to me spending time with him.
"Adult choices. Nothing you need to worry about because I'm going to take care of everything."
Typical response. I loved my father, much more than my mother, and yes, I knew what that said about me, but it was a fact. I knew which parent actually cared about me and which one merely tolerated my existence.
"You can't clean up her messes forever."
"I can and I will whenever they involve you."
There was nothing more for me to say on the issue. My father could be as stubborn as they came when it involved my safety.
"I'll go let my friends know I can't come."
I didn't wait to see if my father was going to say anything else. He had been busy anyway when I walked in, and I was happy for him.
I liked Sarah and I hoped she was good for him. He deserved that after everything my mother put him through.
Now if only I could find a way to spend more time here with the two of them rather than my mother, life would be perfect.
CHAPTER TWENTY
Graham
I watched my son walk away, then turned to Sarah with the universal “what the fuck” gesture. "Am I wrong?"
Sarah looked like she didn't want to get in the middle of it, but instead of keeping quiet, she said, "For wanting to protect him? Absolutely not. For cleaning up Charmaine's messes?" She shrugged her shoulder. "That's not my call to make. I won't be that kind of girlfriend who tells you how to handle your ex."
A big smile broke out across my entire face. "My girlfriend, huh?" I waggled my eyebrows to let her know I liked the way that sounded.
"You demanded I sleep in your bed, so yeah, I assume that's where this is headed."
I picked her up and plopped her ass on the dresser. "That's exactly where this is headed." I threw her words back at her.
Leaning forward, I ran my lips on the underside of her jaw until she was moaning in my ear. "We can't do this here. Andrew could come back up at any moment."
"I'm just kissing you." But I knew what she meant. I needed to stop before I took things too far and scarred my son with the vision of his father getting it on with his new girlfriend. That wouldn't be winning me any “father of the year” awards.
I reluctantly stepped back but not before I ran my thumb across her sex. Her response to it nearly had me saying screw it and throwing her over my shoulder.
"You don't play fair," was her only response but it came out as almost a whine. I loved knowing I was the reason for that tone in her voice.
"Maybe not but I plan to make it up to you later." I winked at her and then headed out of the kitchen, rearranging myself in my pants at the same time.
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Sarah
"Strip for me," Graham demanded from where he sat with his back against the headboard.
Any other time, and with any other person, I would tell them to go to hell. I didn't like to be bossed around in the bedroom, but with Graham it felt almost natural for him to take charge.
