“She took the book as a diversion. The thumb drive with proof of his blackmail was hidden in the building. She wouldn’t tell any of us where.”
Why would she leave it? It didn’t make sense. Taking it and giving it to the FBI or the police made sense. Keeping the target on her back didn’t make sense. “I guess she didn’t want to share her part of the picture.”
“There’s only one reason she went to Russell.”
“Care to enlighten me?” I asked.
“She’s planning something much bigger than any of us has seen yet.” Veronica grabbed my arm and tried to lead me to the door. “Looks like I’ll be going to the party after all, and you’re going to be my plus one.”
“How do you know something is going to happen at the party?” I asked.
“There will be more people on the premises. He might not notice when and if she slips away.”
“He’s a smart guy. He won’t trust her enough to let her out of his sight if he allows her to show up at all.”
“Of course, he’s going to let her show up.”
“And why is that?”
“To remind her of the powerful people he controls.”
