I followed her inside. Air conditioning smacked me in the face as she closed the door behind us. We were in what appeared to be a basement of some building. Everything was covered in dust, making my nose twitch.

She crossed the room to another door and knocked three times before stopping a second and knocking three more.

The locking mechanism sounded from the other side, and the door pulled open.

Amy stood at the entryway. Her eyes widened as the color drained from her face. “What were you thinking, bringing him here?”

“He’s going to help us,” Carlee said, backing Amy away from the door and pushing it open.

I stepped over the threshold and met the eyes of three more people I recognized immediately. The girl that had been ushered from the building upon my arrival yesterday, Veronica, Russell’s secretary, and the man who’d been wearing the headphones in the lab setting.

“Well, isn’t this a surprise.”

“Carlee, you shouldn’t have brought him. He was with Russell yesterday.”

“I know, and he’s fine. I promise.”
