“Stay safe. Call me if we need to schedule a search party for after the blizzard.”
“Thanks,” I said.
I laid the phone on the counter and grabbed my gear again, only this time I grabbed the flashlight out of the closet, and packed a sleeping bag in the event the hunt kept us out all night.
“You two stay here and get on that chopper. I’m going to look for Destiny.”
Putnam’s eyes bulged, and his mouth parted. “You let her wonder off by herself?”
“I didn’tlether do anything,” I said in defense. “And if she wandered away, it was while she’d been trying to save your ass. So, give her some credit.”
“I know. I know. It’s just…” Putnam sighed. “She’s going to steal my story. I know it.”
I shrugged the backpack on again. “What makes you think that?”
“Hello. Ghosts. She’s psychic. She can actually talk to them. They’ll tell her where the bodies are buried, and then she’s going to scoop my hard work.”
Psychic?God damn it.She had been keeping secrets. “You two can fight about it when I bring her down. Right now, you’re wasting the rest of my light.”
I walked out and slammed the door behind me. Taking a second to process my new understanding, I searched the ground for tracks and found them headed in the direction of the woods, where the lady in white had been watched our arrival.
