Another shadow passed through Linus’ eyes. “I pay attention to where they are.”

Unease slithered into Storm’s gut. “Why would you need to do that?”

“Past injuries.” Linus shrugged, not meeting Storm’s eyes.

“Did someone hurt you?” Storm growled. He wanted to push aside Linus’ clothes and scan his body for scars. But that would cross even his lines, so he clenched his fists and made himself hold back.

Linus is safe right now. No one’s hurting him.

Linus dropped his gaze and shrugged again.

“No,” Storm muttered, causing Linus to look up in surprise. “If someone’s threatening to hurt you, or if someone makes you feel unsafe, you’ll tell me immediately. Alright? No matter where you are, I’ll come over and make sure you’re safe.”

Linus frowned. “I don’t want to bother you.”

“Not a bother, Professor.” Storm narrowed his eyes. “I would rather take some time out of my day, than have you hurt at all.”

His omega blinked quickly, digesting those words. “Maybe.”

“Good enough.” Not that Linus had to know about Storm’s full-time protection, anyway.

They found the nose splints quickly enough. Storm plucked the box out of Linus’ hands, except Linus snatched it back.

“I’m paying for them,” Linus said fiercely. “I was the one who hurt you.”

There were many things Storm could say no to, but a gift from his omega was not one of them.

Especially not a first gift.

He grinned and rolled his shoulders, stepping back. “Okay.”

Linus eyed him warily, clutching the box to his chest all the way to the checkout stand.

“You’re adorable, you know,” Storm blurted.

Linus’ mouth fell open. “Me?”

Storm shrugged and tried to play it off as something minor. “I don’t see why not. You have pretty eyes.”

Even then, Linus brightened, peeking shyly at Storm as though Storm had given him the best compliment of his life.

Storm blushed, looking away.I shouldn’t be getting so close to him. He could send me away for any number of reasons, at any time.

He had blood on his hands. He was an ex-convict. He had invaded Linus’ house countless times and followed him everywhere in Meadowfall.

Hell, he’d rubbed his cock all over Linus’ sex toys, and watched him bury those toys inside himself.

Storm wasn’t a good alpha.

He had never planned on pursuing something real with his omega.

And yet the more he allowed Linus to see him, to know him, the more he wanted to stay in Linus’ bubble, on the off chance that he would receive one of Linus’ looks, one of his smiles.

He is my everything.

But Storm already knew that.

Linus set down the nose splints at the checkout stand, smiling sweetly at the omega behind the counter. The cashier looked at Storm and paled.
