Kenzie shakes her head. “You’ve got plenty of paper at your house already. I can’t imagine more paperwork with all the endorsement deals you have going on.”

“Exactly.”

It’s finally our turn in the computer room. Kenzie takes a seat at the computer to the right and I have to sit with my back to her, since the computer next to her is turned off.

“Here we go,” I say, following the very strict instructions on the paper next to me.

The click of the mouse behind me causes me to turn. “You’re already answering questions? How are you that fast?”

“I already had an account, remember? I just had to login.” She goes back to answering the questions and I’m still waiting for the blue circle of death to finish loading whatever the next page will be.

A sheet of paper sits against the wall and I grab it, tearing off a small piece and rolling it between my fingers. I flick it backwards, but get no reply. A few more with bigger sections of paper and they start flying back at me.

“Keep your paper to yourself,” Kenzie says with a laugh. “Some of us have to get back to work after this.”

“Should we race to see who gets done first?” I ask, dreading the fact that there are one hundred and twenty-five questions.

“I think I’m going to win. You just ripped up your portion of the written exam.”

Turning the paper over, I see the questions with several lines below each one for the written answer.

“Okay, well, don’t leave without me.”

“We still have the first interviews today. I think we’ll both be here for a while. There’s one woman who looks like she’s a talker. I can only imagine how much editing they’ll have to do,” Kenzie says.

“Psst,” I say, trying to contain my laughter. “What did you put for question number one?”

“Trey Hatch,” Kenzie says, turning around. “Do I need to send you to the principal’s office?” She manages to have a stone-cold expression until the very end.

I nod a few times and say, “Yeah, this does feel like I’m back in school again but don’t know any of the answers to the test.”

Kenzie laughs and says, “Trey, this is supposed to be a personal test about your likes and dislikes. You better answer it honestly or you might end up with me.”

“What’s wrong with that?” I ask, staring into her eyes when she turns around in shock.

We sit there for several long moments and a knock on the door causes us to break the staring contest.

“How’s it going in here?” Meg asks, glancing between the two of us.

“I’m going to need a new paper,” I say, holding up the ripped one.

Meg chuckles and says, “I can do that. We’re almost ready for the next first interview, so let me know when you’ve finished.” She shuts the door and I go back to staring at the screen, wondering what she meant.

I can’t concentrate on the questions on the screen, only wondering why Kenzie would make it sound like the worst thing to be matched to her. The woman can make anything funny and has a lot of depth I didn’t see before.

“I’m done,” Kenzie says a few minutes later.

A glance at the screen tells me I’m only on question twenty-five. “Okay, well, good luck on camera.”

She gives me a smile and then walks out of the room. Something about the last few minutes was like a switch to the atmosphere in the room.

It takes every brain cell in me to finish out the test, all the while wondering what Kenzie put for her answers. What would happen if we were matched? A shot of excitement shoots through me. I can see a future with Kenzie. That might be a bit premature given the fact I haven’t finished this test, but I’m suddenly hoping she’s on my list of potential dates.

KENZIE

I’m still kicking myself for turning the attention to the remote possibility that Trey would be matched to me. It’s possible he didn’t even register the words, but I hurry through the test to get out of the room because I’m starting to overheat.
